Following the demise of B*Witched, the Irish pop world was looking for a new young female to step into the fray. Enter Samantha Mumba, with her sparkling debut single "Gotta Tell You," which went straight to the upper echelons of the U.K. pop charts in the summer of 2000. Her debut album of the same name opens with that track, swiftly followed by her second single, "Body II Body" which came with David Bowie's seal of approval--he allowed her to heavily sample "Ashes to Ashes" for its central loop. The rest of the material is an even mix of sweet R&B and upbeat infectious pop, which beguile and enchant the listener. Gotta Tell You is an extremely confident debut, closing as it does with a rousing cover of the Motown standard "Signed, Sealed, Delivered"--a feat few girls Samantha's age could carry off with such aplomb. Debut albums rarely come this consummate. --Helen Marquis

The first time I knew about Samantha was her music video "Gotta Tell You" and I had no idea that she was Ireland at the time. I haven't heard about her since three years ago. I remember seeing her in a music video as some firefighter. Wasn't she supposed to release a cd that same year? Well, 4 years later I finally get to listen to her first cd. Here's my review:

    1. Gotta Tell You- the single that started it all. 5/5
    2. Baby Come Over- I remember every time I would hear about this song...the title would remind of Christina's Come On Over Baby 4/5
    3. The Boy 3/5
    4. Don't Need You To Tell Me I'm Pretty- umm...it's okay 3/5
    5. Always Come Back To You- Great! 5/5
    6. Feelin Is Right-5/5
    7. Body II Body- I love this song! 5/5
    8. What's It Gonna Be- Okay...4/5
    9. Never Meant To Be- The best so far, a beautiful ballad...5/5
    10. Isn't It Strange- Really cute 5/5
    11. Lately- This song sound so familiar....who sings this song again??? 5/5
Overall, I give this album 9.5/10

4 out of 5 stars A Really Solid Pop Album   April 18, 2005

Samantha Mumba's debut album is loaded with catchy pop tunes and decent vocals. It's got good beats, and typical lyrics. The thing is, that's what the whole album is. Typical. It sounds like loads of other pop albums. But hey, pop music is great, so why change it?

    1. Gotta Tell You - The album's biggest hit. It's got a good melody and is all-around catchy. 10/10
    2. Baby, Come Over (This Is Our Night) - Another hit. Good vocals, catchy tune. I like it. 9/10
    3. The Boy (Remix) - I like the intro, but that's about all. Not much happening here...5/10 (for the intro)
    4. Don't Need You to Tell Me I'm Pretty - I think this one is sort of boring. I guess it's pretty, but, you know. Blah. 6/10
    5. Always Come Back to Your Love - Another great track. It's upbeat and fun. Catchy chorus. 9/10
    6. Feelin' Is Right - Not the best, not the worst. It's good enough for a listen or two. 7/10
    7. Body II Body - Another hit. It's got a good beat and cool lyrics. Funky in a good way. 9/10
    8. What's It Gonna Be - Reminds me of Always Come Back to Your Love. Not quite as good, but still fun. 8/10
    9. Never Meant to Be - A really pretty ballad. It's relaxing after the bouncey songs. 8/10
    10. Possibly my favorite song on the album. Energetic and fun. Amazingly catchy. 10/10
    11. Lately - Another good one. A perfect close to the album. Great on a summer day. 9/10

Gotta Tell You is a great album for lovers of pop music. It's got a few so-so songs, but all of the catchy ones make up for them. Overall Rating: 9/10

If there ever debuted a Britney soundalike in the wake of the late '90s female teen pop boom it would be this girl. But with Samantha Mumba's Gotta Tell You producers finally got a darn good piece of fluff. From its dark "Gotta Tell You" to its chanty "Lately," GTY is a close-to-perfect pop record, full of everything that previous producers for Britney, Christina, Jessica and Mandy forgot. Mumba's pop/R&B CD is a worthwhile purchase for any pop music fan. Whether or not Samantha has a good album isn't the question; it's whether or not she can keep up and not be overshadowed by teen queens Britney and Christina!
