Fortepianos, period harmonium, choir & soloists. Great stuff. September 13, 2006 Steven Guy (Croydon, South Australia) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is an excellent recording of this sacred chamber work. The choir and soloists are accompanied by two fortepianos and a period harmonium. The work is ethereal and lovely - perhaps an example of the "sins of old age" as Rossini put it.
Sacred music when through something of a drought in Italy in the 19th century. Rossini's Petite Messe solennelle and Verdi's Requiem are probably the two most well known Italian sacred pieces from this time. Rossini's Stabat Mater is another great 19th century work - also given a period instrument treatment by the RIAS-Kammerchor.
The soloists in this recording, Krassimira Stoyanova, soprano; Birgit Remmert, alto; Steve Davislim, tenor; and Hanno Müller-Brachmann, bass, are excellent. The entire work has an elegant chamber music feel to it and I enjoyed reading the notes about the work in the CD booklet.
Robert King and the King's Consort recently recorded this work for HYPERION, but please do not pass over this marvellous recording.
Highly recommended by me.
Rossini's choral masterpiece April 9, 2003 Frank Lin 11 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is an unusual work in that it is a religious piece yet it has quite a bit of a more secular, flippant flair here and there -- no, not like William Tell or Algiers, but it's nevertheless grand, majestic, melodic, and at times joyful. Great choral parts and orchestration. Highly recommended.
