There's an adage in Hollywood that writers want to direct, musicians yearn to be actors, and actors hunger to be musicians. Indeed, ample evidence abounds to support the maxim. Which brings us to Dogstar, who've ironically never escaped being dismissed as lightweight, arguably because of their Hollywood connections; the band's bass player is film star Keanu Reeves, while drummer Rob Mailhouse did his time on a soap opera. Ten years on, Happy Ending represents their American "debut release," and if its occasionally grungy pretensions seem to have missed that bandwagon by a year or four, they also can't betray the pop sensibilities ("Halo," "Stagger") of ex-Nuns member Bret Domrose, whose singing and writing is actually the band's focus. The ex-San Francisco punk rocker's songs are possessed by an almost folksy sensitivity ("Cornerstore,""Washington") wed to a polished alt-rock. Unfortunately, Domrose's rhythm section mates are both fine actors. The presence of radio-friendly producer Richie Zito and a cover of the Carpenters' "Superstar" seem to hint that this is a band that both yearns to be taken seriously and is willing to lease a little soul for a shot at mainstream acceptance. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars that star is for dogstar   April 29, 2007

the happiest ending on "happy ending" by dogstar, was in fact the moment i reached the ending of this record. an album, which i cannot, no matter how hard i try, believe exists. i hope keanu and BBT get together and jam on the sure-fire smash-hit "hobo endings"

Although I am seldom drawn in by celebrity hype, I admit that I bought bought this CD because of that and my curiousity.
I continue to listen to it because it is good. Glad I took the time~

4 out of 5 stars Funny thing about people!   April 21, 2006

I really like this band! I wish I had seen them play at Trees years and years ago. Whoever is reading this..buy it, put it on your IPod, take it with you on road trips, you'll love it!!!

Listen to this band as a music lover not as a Keanu fanatic. Give the guys a chance and take them seriously!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not real good either   December 21, 2005

I was definitely expecting more from this album. It's not bad but it's not real good either. The songs pretty much sound the same and they feel like they were written the same way, same formula.
Listen to it first definitely, it's not for everyone.

This CD was such a pain to get my hands on, but when I finally did I was in heaven. [I don't think I spelled that right.] I am a (...) when it comes to keanu Reeves, so I broke down and listened to the Amazon samples. I was hooked and I have been ever since. my favorite songs are: "Slipping Down" "Washington" "A Dreamtime" "Stagger" and "Blown Away" is great even though it is the last song. I have to say that this CD is worth it. It doesan't matter if you like Keanu Reeves or not. I am still tryin to decide if that is him singing on "Enemies" but I may never be able to. I have been telling all my friends about it and have ordered Dogstar's two other CDs. It's the best CD I own and even other people in my family will listen to it so I don't have to hole up in my room.
