    Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Here are some of Yoakam's best moments--which is to say some of the finest moments of recent country music history--distilled to their intoxicating essence. With only a simply strummed acoustic guitar to accompany these tales of lost love, shattered dreams, and barstool misery, Yoakam wields the ability to move mountains and break hearts with an attitude that's both understated and confident. A stunning collection of country music's new standards. --S. Duda

    Amazon.com essential recording
Over the course of his career, Dwight Yoakam has both relished and leveraged his "outsider" image. From his earliest days sharing stages with Los Angeles punk bands to his rejection of Nashville's hit machine, Yoakam's career has been smart, quirky, and hip, even as his music looked back to the glories of Buck Owens's Bakersfield sound. Through it all, of course, Yoakam's music has rarely faltered and his natural abilities are often stunning. On Dwightyoakamacoustic.net, a run through Yoakam's greatest hits featuring just acoustic guitar and voice, the only misstep is the cheesy title. Throughout these 25 songs (most of which you know by heart), Yoakam uses the intimacy of the unplugged format to offer new insights into his music. Here, the sad parts are sadder, the sly parts are more mischievous, and the dusty swagger seems even more charming. But it's Yoakam's raw talent and enthusiasm that steals this show. His guitar playing sparkles: from the intricate fills on "I'll Be Gone" to the straightahead stomp of "Nothing's Changed Here," Yoakam proves he knows his way around a six-stringer. And with only that guitar standing between his voice and your ears, these tunes go down easier than free beer. From the Elvislike vamping on "It Only Hurts When I Cry" to his barstool lament on "It Won't Hurt," Yoakam growls, begs, and croons with enough conviction to make this stripped-down collection absolutely essential. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars Next best to Inviting this Master of Music and his guitar to your home!   September 15, 2009
    Astilbe (California, USA)
Love the simplicity and intimate sound of this unique album. You will really enjoy this wonderful collection of songs with just Dwight Yoakam's distinctively beautiful, crystal clear voice and his exceptionally skillful work making music with his acoustic guitar. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Dwight Yoakam Acoustic   August 8, 2009

Great album. If you like Dwight Yoakam's voice, you will love this album. Some great songs done very well.

5 out of 5 stars Viva Dwight Yoakam!   May 2, 2009
    Lisa L. Munro (Tucson, Arizona)
I downloaded this yesterday and can't stop listening. I've heard most of these songs on previous CDs, but the fact that its acoustic, just DY and his guitar, makes the hurt more poignant, the sweet moments more tender, and the emotions so raw that it induces a visceral response deep in the soul. I'd highly recommend this to established DY fans, but also to people who aren't quite sure they like what passes for country music these days. Top 40-pop-country-that-all sounds-alike this is not. DY channels country greats such as Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, and even the young Elvis (as another reviewer astutely noted), demonstrating his vocal range and ability to turn a note with plenty of the signature Yoakam twang. The biggest surprise here is "Guitars, Cadillacs" sung a capella, which turns it into a haunting melody that keeps coming back to me. There's not a single bad track here.

    Recommended wholeheartedly.

5 out of 5 stars the hearts core revealed   January 9, 2009

I have always been a Dwight fan. This album tells the story from the hearts core where the song came from before all the bells and whistels were added.. The next best thing would be to have Dwight himself sitting on my porch with his guitar singing to me personnaly. Sit back, crack a cold one and open your heart. Hillbilly music at its best.....

5 out of 5 stars Favorite acoustic album - some versions are better than the originals   January 5, 2009
    Cristina (Seattle)
I really enjoy this CD. For one I love acoustic music. And second, Mr. Yoakam, who is a remarkable vocalist, somehow reworks the depth and emotional arrangement of each track and in doing so gives a refreshing way for listeners to hear and take in these songs. Most noteworthy is Guitars, Cadillac's, which is exclusively Yoakam's voice; just his voice and no instruments. The original version is a crowd-pleasing rockabilly take and, in contrast, the one offered in this acoustic set is slow and wailing. Wow!

Although I like all the tracks included in this CD, a few versions have become my favorites: Bury Me, Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room, A Thousand Miles From Nowhere and Sad, Sad Music.

The acoustic version of Home for Sale would have been on my favorite list, but I love how the original is arranged.

More versions can make my favorite list but I have not heard all of the originals yet. I just started listening to this artist. He is now my favorite male vocalist. I do intend to get the rest of his collection.

I am telling you, one can learn a lot about music - just by studying the works put out by Mr. Yoakam. I look forward to his next CD. I also hope he considers putting out a gospel album.
