At a point in their career when most bands would rest their laurels upon a greatest-hits package or live album, Metallica has done both, but with a decidedly loopy twist. They've recorded a double-live greatest-hits package with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra "sitting in." Rock history and cutout bins are littered with previous attempts at a rock-symphonic fusion, from Emerson, Lake & Palmer to Deep Purple to the Moody Blues and the Siegel-Schwall Blues Band. But while previous efforts at mixing the low-brow with the high-brow have mostly ended up browbeating the intended audience, S&M plays like a precarious joy ride. Set against the shrewd efforts of a team of orchestrators and arrangers (who employ enough taste to keep proceedings from sounding like one long "Live and Let Die" outtake), Metallica plays for their lives, undercutting their general somber tone by ratcheting up their musicianship several notches. The most underrated player here is SFO guest conductor and soundtrack vet Michael Kamen, whose attention to detail and nuance--and intuitive grasp of the Metallica canon--keeps this unlikely meeting of the minds focused and on track. -Jerry McCulley

    3 out of 5 stars Review   February 8, 2010

The album itself is great! The CD case was broken which wasn't mentioned in the advert (it was second hand) but otherwise all fine.

Great CD, got it used, but seller could have passed it off as new because it was in such good condition.

I've only recent gotten into Metallica, thanks to Guitar hero.
As such i was quite thrilled when I heard "No leaf clover" in Guitar hero; Metallica.
I like very few bands, but Metallica is the sort of thing I do enjoy listening to, I also like Classical, oddly enough, so you can Imagine S&M was right up my alley, i ordered it at ocne when I discovered that iit existed.

needless to say; AWESOME AWESOME AWEOME and so on

This is my all time favorite record of artistic performance in the entire book of human history. If I were to make one of those ridiculous "Chuck Norris" references, where Chuck does something that is totally unbelievable and astonishingly amazing, I would say: "Chuck Norris was at the S&M concert!"

In the past ten years (yes, it's really been ten years since it was recorded), I have listed to this album, all the way through, thousands of times, and I've actually listened to it about ten times this week alone. At least once a year I get this album off of my shelf and listen to it at work, sometimes for about a month straight.

Throughout early Metallica history, James Hetfield never once had a singing lesson, but his music was, and still is, of the best. Picture this: Two hours of some of the best Metallica songs of all time, performed live, after decades of experience as a band (as well as prior experience working with Michael Kamen), James actually went out and took singing lessons before this concert took place. The song "No Leaf Clover" truly shows the results of James' singing lessons, as he perfectly moves between extreme tones and smoothly reaches pitches he has never used before. "No Leaf Clover" also features some of his "secret" riffs that he wrote throughout his career, but never had a chance to finish until Michael and the band decided to make this album. In this song, the beginning lyrics "it feels right this time" truly ring true as "No Leaf Clover" is performed, for the first and only time. Just knowing a little of the history behind the song truly enhances the overall experience.

I could write about each song individually, but I am sure you do not want to read a book, or you would be shopping for books instead. So, I will leave the rest of the album as a pleasant surprise.

For the first listen, I highly recommend ensuring you are in the optimal setting before listening to this album. The room should be dimly lit; you should have nothing on your mind, being totally open to the music, but not to distractions; be sure to setup a high quality surround sound stereo system; and ensure that you will not need to take a break for about two hours: Then listen to the entire thing all the way through. After that, buy the DVD and watch it on a very large display, in the same setting. You will not regret this life experience!
