Amazon.com essential recording Considered the breakthrough album that delivered a more palatable version of industrial music to the commercial audience, Pretty Hate Machine left its dingy mark on pop culture. The abrasive "sonarchy" of the album was first churned by despondent club-goers who roiled with the rhythms and aligned with the angst-ridden convictions. Since its release, the album's tempered deviations came to signify an aesthetic reverie for machine-driven martyrdom. Permeated by hissing engines and dissonant strains, the tracks cascade outside channels of modern complacency. Hits like "Head Like a Hole" and "Down in It" are recognized by the acidic beats, piercing riffs, and lyrical hostilities which snare the listener with disparaging rhapsody. Not for the light-headed, Pretty Hate Machine afflicts the inner sanctum and strikes a nerve. --Lucas Hilbert

1989 NIN: debut record, on CD. January 8, 2010 Dr. Feelgood (USA) Considering the low-budget recording, this record sounds great, and the songs are all good as well. Trent Reznor really knew what he was doing when he put this record together.
The effigy of the changing times. December 16, 2009 hi13ts Pretty Hate Machine is Nine Inch Nail's debut album. It debuted in 1989 and did moderately well thanks to the suppporting tour. It's quite a bit different than the NIN albums that fans are use to now-a-days. It's much less hazy and organic such as Downard Spiral and With Teeth. It definitely draws some influence from its era such as the dance beats and techno synths. The difference between this record and Broken is huge and it definitely shows a younger, less mature Trent.
The album's music is the most melodic and accessible NIN music to date. Its hooks border synth-pop and it's beats are reminiscent of 80's techno. It is, however, extremely more aggressive than most 80's music at the time. Trent's words speak his heart truthfully and the music coincides with the lyrics being sung. It's quite a masterpiece in its own respect, being a short 10-song album with so many potential hit singles. At the time, Trent wasn't experience in the layering and production that is apparent on Downward Spiral. He really does add an industrial influence, but this album can hardly be called industrial. I would group it it in with techno-rock or some sort such as.
The growth of Trent is something that has been praised and welcomed by all. His work on the Downward Spiral and The Fragile are unbeatable, but this debut album shows that Trent has a firm hold on his musical genius. This album basically gives off the hint that nothing but better records will be made by this artist, and history shows that it's true, Trent did grow musically and as a result he created on of the most important albums of the 1990's: The Downward Spiral. Pretty Hate Machine is recommended to all for everyone will be able to find what they like on such an accessible and simple album.

Masterpiece September 4, 2009 Sarah N. Goodman (cromwell, CT usa) I stumbled on this album after my boyfriend in college got me hooked on Downward Spiral, which is much more raw and hard. I love that cd as well, but when I got this cd, I was hooked. One reviewer was right, I was instantly possessed by this record and played this cd until it broke and I had to buy another one. I was in my last year of college, driving an hour back and forth from home, and this was constantly on my stereo. I honestly can't tell you which song is my favorite because I believe that all of them tell a story together. The sounds are so layered, so that each time you listen, you hear something else in the song you hadn't noticed before. When I put this in my stereo, I can't hit shuffle or skip past any song. once I have it in, even if i am craving only a particular song, I end up listening to the entire thing because i can't just listen to one song.
This is not a hard nine inch nails album, but this is the root of where he started. I am married now, and I played this album for my husband, and he was amazed because he thought that NIN was something different. He only knew Closer, Head like a Hole, Hurt and Perfect Drug. I love all of those songs, but they do nothing to showcase the sheer talent that Trent Reznor possesses. It amazes me that he created this as his first album, and demo really, playing all of the instruments himself. I dont' care if someone doesn't like NIN, no one can say he is untalented!
Love me some NiN! July 12, 2009 Devan Sizemore (¡Cerca de bibliotecha!) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So much better when the dude was on drugs... this is the reflections of brilliant and intricate mind amplified by 2000% on LSD! New NiN just isn't the same as this album.
