Creed burst out of Florida with 1997's My Own Prison, a dark but commercial debut reminiscent of the early-'90s Seattle sound. Creed's moody guitar grunge and ardent lyrics, coupled with singer Scott Stapp's passionate vocals, helped My Own Prison sell millions. Human Clay demonstrates that this likable quartet hasn't messed with success; they turn in a sophomore outing rife with evocative moodiness, soaring guitars, and a dark, roiling, intense vibe. "Beautiful" is but one of the winners on this strong 11-song CD. Haunting and indeed beautiful, the track is more delicate and seductive than most heard here, as is another lilting and mysterious entry, "Never Die," which boasts some Middle Eastern accents. "Higher" is typical Creed--safe, emotive guitar rock for the masses, but with a slight edge. Memorable hooks, Soundgarden-like guitars, and Vedder-like vocals make Human Clay at once compelling and effectively redundant. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars Withstood the test of time for me   December 22, 2009
    K. Hudson (Tempe, AZ)
This album is worth a listen. I don't like this band as much as Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, Bush or several others, but I am glad that these songs are on rotation in my music collection. The music is overall good and the lyrics actually have meaning.

4 out of 5 stars The definition of `one step forward, two steps back'...   December 11, 2009
    Andrew Ellington (Mulholland Drive)
Shortly after Creed released the mediocre `Higher' I saw them in concert. It was one of the best live acts I've ever seen. They actually made me enjoy that song, despite my better judgment. When a song like `Higher' is the worst you can come up with, you know that you are doing something right, because even that song (in all it's safe, cheesy ridiculousness) is still somewhat enjoyable and catchy as all get out.

`Human Clay' was Creed's sophomore album, their follow up to `My Own Prison', and while nothing on this album even comes close to the blistering brilliance of songs like `One' and `Unforgiven', `Human Clay' does offer us a different side to Creed, and it introduces us to the new direction they were taking; a sadly more commercial yet interestingly more diverse one.

Instead of maintaining their alternative edge, Creed adopted more of a Top-40 sound, which can be heard on `Higher' and `With Arms Wide Open'. They stripped away edge to unveil sentimentality, and while it works sometimes (`With Arms Wide Open' may push it a tad, but it is still beautiful) it comes off a little misplaced at times. This album also suffers from a few tracks that are just mediocre in concept and a few that are too reminiscent of other, better, tracks to stand out on their own.

With a handful of good material and a slew of lazy contributions, `Human Clay' is easily Creed's worst album.

The album opens with `Are You Ready?', a track that is extremely forgettable. It lacks any real punch, even if it sports an aggressive nature. It's too, what's the word, cheap. Songs like `Wrong Way' and `Inside us All' fall under that same category. They just seem like filler B-side type tracks that were thrown on at the last minute to add some length to the album. `Wash Away Those Years' has some value, but it is to familiar sounding to me, and `Higher' is just a whole bowl of cheesy stew. I love how this was labeled `typical Creed' when it sounds NOTHING like what they delivered on their debut.

This one is far too `pop/rock' sounding.

`What If' has real teeth, but it also gets obnoxious and repetitive. `Say I' has the same problem (I'll never understand the idea that all a chorus needs to be is a repeated phrase). I really like both songs and they have a quality that reminds me of a polished version of their debut, but both also have that one flaw that knocks them down a peg. `Never Die' is slightly elevated, but it also loses some edge in areas.

The best on the album is the trifecta of `Beautiful', `Faceless Man' and `With Arms Wide Open'. `With Arms Wide Open' is easily the worst of the three, for it does lay on the sentiment a little too thick, but it is a really well done song that is meant to be emotional and so I forgive Creed. `Beautiful' is easily the most respectable of the three, and the most reflective of where this album should have gone. It is a very nice example of Creed maintaining their `edge' yet showing a sophomore polish that comes from more money and more studio support. It is a song that shows growth. That said; `Faceless Man' is easily the best. I love the guitar work, and Stapp's soft and sincere vocals are just so moving. His lyrical message also feels much closer to his debut than the rest of the album. One thing that was so impressive about Creed's debut was that they had such a clear message that showed no signs of tampering (aside from their `lords name in vain' dilemma on `What's This Life For?'). For me, `Human Clay' feels heavily influenced.

    But I could be wrong.

In the end I give this one a B-. I know that, from my review, a B- may seem like a high rating, but like I said, even the bad tracks here have layers of catchy likeability. It's hard to dislike this album, but to say it is without flaws is a statement blinded by bias.

    4 out of 5 stars "We'll surely melt in the rain . . ."   January 13, 2009

I know that the band Creed sounds a lot like Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots, but it still made some good music in the 1990's. The album "Human Clay" is just as good as "Core" and "Vitalogy". Songs like "What if" and "Say I" can be best described as awe-inspiring, with heavy and melodic guitar riffs throughout. "Faceless Man" is lyrical, and is my favorite song in the album. The singles "With Arms Wide Open" and "Higher" sadly don't do justice when compared to the other songs. I don't know why; they just sound so sappy. "Never Die" and "Wash Away Those Years" sound terrible; the melodies are flat-out irritating. Finally, the closer called "Inside Us All" makes for a perfect ending to this album.

Despite its flaws, it's still a good album. And Creed is a good band; just not as good as Pearl Jam & Stone Temple Pilots.

    Grade: B+

4 out of 5 stars The breakthrough album   November 17, 2007
    Paul Lawrence (Australia)
Creeds breakthrough album comes armed with a number of slants on the bands staunchly hard rock musical outlook. With meaty guitar sounds the album is firmly a hard rock affair though with less moments bordering on metal than the My Own Prison album. Scott Stapp seems to have become better at putting feeling into his vocal performance and the timbre of his voice is still impressive. Of course with all vocalists he won't suit all tastes but his smooth mid range delivery definitely suits the full blooded rock that it's backed up with.

The album changes gears from heavier to lighter shades of Creeds post grunge hard rock, I suppose Nickeback were their main competition, very few other bands having much success in breaking into the mainstream in the name of rock with the exception of teen friendly pop-punkers during much of Creeds existence. And that is another thing that probably worked in their favour, the honest and at times quite gritty guitar riffs and melodies being a welcome change from the endless procession of teen starlets we were forced to suffer during the early 00's.

As for my favourite songs? Well With Arms Wide Open is a quality song where Stapps voice is front and centre and the band take a back seat and Higher is an excellent full bodied rock `n' roll song. In addition I'd have to give a special mention to Beautiful which has a good short sharp riff that clips along when unleashed while the lyrics are actually a bit of a downer. But in a good way, the band touching on the subject of youthful disillusion with wanting something it's perhaps better not to get. And the problems that can happen if you don't keep it in perspective.

Overall this is an album that hangs together as a collection of songs, something Creed had a knack for right from the word go, everything sounds like it belongs here even if not all the songs are pistol packin' desperados. The production is good - I mean it'd wanna be since this is an album from '99 right? And as for the much discussed religious overtones they are there, but as per their next album the lyrics are usually vague enough that even those not from the bible belt USA can enjoy this album and take something from the lyrics. And that DOES denote talent, regardless of what the backlash merchants might have you believe.

For the fan, well your only reading this for your own amusement - I mean you already own this and just wanted to see the opinions of others right? As for the casual fan who is thinking of buying this you'd be better served to get their greatest hits collection initially released in 2004 and then decide on whether to pick up the back catalogue.
