With Bigger & Blacker, Chris Rock teams up with producer Prince Paul once again; the duo snagged a Grammy together for their work on 1997's brash Roll with the New. Bigger is a cutting-edge mishmash of studio skits, live recordings, and crazy musical numbers with guest shots from Ol' Dirty Bastard, Ice Cube, Biz Markie, Gerald Levert, and others. The bulk of the album is road-tested live material (mostly recorded at the Comedy Corner in West Palm Beach, Florida, in May 1999) that ranges from the difference between ghetto and suburban shopping malls to taxes, homophobia, insurance, and women. Sandwiched between the live bits are a send-up of N.W.A.'s "F**k tha Police" with Ice Cube; a ribald interpretation of "Brown Sugar" with Biz Markie; and "Me and ODB," a hilarious, pimped-out ghetto fairytale set to the funky beat of AWB's "Pick up the Pieces." Rock's inescapable appeal lies in his delivery--his manic energy teeters on the edge, reined in just enough so that it remains on this side of manic. Bigger & Blacker shows that Rock is equally at home whether flexing his standup material in front of a live audience or goofing in the studio. --Spence Abbott

3 out of 5 stars Hard to listen to all the way through   May 3, 2009
    Paul Lawrence (Australia)
On Bigger and Blacker Chris Rock revisits some of his earlier skits and that is both a good and a bad thing. Think about it - from 1963 to 1967 Bill Cosby put out at least one album per year. Now sure, he probably didn't have Chris Rocks' touring schedule nor movie commitments. But that's still a pretty good track record. Yet Rock is repeating material and wanting fans to buy it all over again.

But to be fair, it's not all rehash. And there are some truly hilarious moments here if you can get over the relentless barrage of foul language, sort of a North American Billy Connolly in his inability to roll out a whole sentence without some sort of expletive. Sometimes it's funny and very biting, other times it just means it takes him that much longer to tell whatever joke he's performing.

What saves this release for me is that it's so varied, there are 22 tracks on here and therefore there is sure to be something for everyone (well apart from those who find the language barrier insurmountable). While some of the material is topical - stuff about Lewinskygate - as I write it's still something that is well known and so the comedy hasn't suffered...yet.

What is also nice about this release is the way the liner notes give very full credits to all involved making the album seem more of a collaborative effort and I find this a nice touch.

All up I enjoyed this album but can't give it more than three stars due to the rehash factor, the slightly annoying level of swearing and general overuse of racial humour in a way that's just not as funny as, say, Russell Peters. But there are half a dozen tracks here of side splitting hilarity to balance out my criticisms. One for the mans fans.

4 out of 5 stars Not the same as the DVD   October 20, 2007
    F. Luong (Fairfax, VA United States)
I expected the usual sketch comedy bits but I was disappointed that the recording they used for the stand-up bits was not the same as what they had from the DVD. I felt that the crowd and the material deliver was more lively from the DVD. That said, Chris Rock is still my favorite comedian and the CD is worth purchasing.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped for...   September 1, 2007

I am a big fan of Chris Rock and have seen him live (he's amazingly talented, worth every penny). I was disappointed in this CD for the arrangements chosen as well as the sound quality, which is very poor. You can barely hear the audience laughter, and it sounds like Rock is shouting through nearly all of the routines. I personally was not found of the ODB inclusions/Fly Girl Nerd Boy stuff because it felt like SNL skits and took away from the stand-up. I will buy Chris Rock again, but I do not recommend this CD.
