On The Slim Shady LP, Eminem wants it all. He's conflicted, you see; the world has treated him badly, and he wants to respond in kind. But he isn't a straight-up gangsta--this is, after all, the first release on Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records, his post-Death Row-era venture--and Eminem (born Marshall Mathers) doesn't really want anyone to follow in his footsteps, which leads to some interesting contradictions on this album. In the first single, "My Name Is," he's self-deprecating, rapping about his poor upbringing and his hairy palms. But on the very next song, "Guilty Conscience," he plays the devil to Dr. Dre's angel--that is, until Eminem brings up an incident from Dre's devilish past, rapping, "You gonna take advice from someone who slapped Dee Barnes?" Later, on "'97 Bonnie & Clyde," he turns Will Smith's "Just the Two of Us" on its ear, making it a tale of murder; but on "My Fault," he actually feels bad--though whether it's for the girl he overdosed or for himself is tough to figure out. With his nasal Midwestern tone, Mathers has a clean, clear flow, and the production--by Dr. Dre, Marky, and Jeff Bass--is crisp but consistently fun. With his outlook, it's tough to take Eminem too seriously, but he's made an album you don't have to take seriously to enjoy. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind   February 9, 2010
    Joshua Disney (Fort Collins)
With so many reviews of this album, it is irrelevant to comment on the quality of the music and production; that said, this is an album that even as a cynical hip-hop fan, I am consistently blown away by.
Eminem circa The Slim Shady LP was willing to trample over any social boundaries of what it is "okay" to say on tape, with a prototypical juvenile male anger. The catharsis of violence with laughter, depraved sexuality and lyricism make for a unique listening experience.
It becomes clear within a song or two that you are listening to someone who remembers everyone who ever crossed him, somebody who without a creative outlet would likely be violent. Or is it an act? There is a tongue-in-cheek nature to most of the music (especially the Top #40 singles) that makes me seriously question the intelligence of those offended by the album.
"Rock Bottom" is, in my opinion, the best Eminem song, and a framework that he would build on with later albums that included more political music.
This music is not meant to provide a grand statement of the universe, a cohesive view on how to live your life, raise a child or deal with relationships. But, when life is driving you crazy, this album is a lot like an hour of Grand Theft Auto.
In short, this album is a manifesto of the id. An album about the things that make you want to scream. An album for anyone who's been cheated on, worked at a fast food restaurant, or have to go the pawnshop to support your drug and/or alcohol habit.
One of the defining musical statements of the '90s. For real.

Marshall doesn't get much better than this example of his breakout success. The video, the music, all great. I bought it when it first came out and wore it out from playing it so much. Now I downloaded it digitally. Still great.

5 out of 5 stars 1999 When America's Biggest Problem was Eminem   August 27, 2009

When this album broke the charts and entered the ears of America's Teenagers it did more than shake things up, it completely shattered the delicate balance of 1990s Clinton era Neo-Liberalism. Eminem, a cute blond white boy with a sadistic but sharp sense of humor and unmatched writing skills became the object of many peoples fantasies and worst nightmares

This being his first studio album, nobody outside of the Hip hop music world really knew who the F*** he was! Needless to say, from Gay Rights Activists to Christian Family Values Advocates, his first impression managed to incite anger on every side of the fence! It's hard not to see somebody as a threat if it is also clear that they are incredibly intelligent, articulate and could likely outsmart you. Eminem, could also Rap his ass off and carved his own path both in his writing style and musical style. A white Rapper being very much white in every way and not trying to be "Thug" or pretending to be "Old School" in any way was completely foreign to people. He instead, drew inspiration from his own life, emotions and attitude toward society. Beyond his "Skillz" as a Rap Artist, (there are a ton of great Rap Artistst out there), what made the Hip Hop Music World take notice was his authenticity. Authenticity is what Hip Hop is all about and Eminem had it in spades!

This album, more than shaking up stuffy white people, shook up Hip Hop music. That said Dr. Dre had allot to do with the sound of this Rap Masterpiece. West Coast Gangsta Rap was finally Frickin dead! East Coast Rap had turned into either overly preachy and political or completely nostalgic...Rap had clearly become an overly reproduced format by the end of the 1990s. It took these two mavericks to save it from the grave.

That said, it is a bloody concept album! It's progressive and innovative, it's psychopathic, it's funny and it is so well done that you can't help but like it. For many of the suspected Eminem Haters of the time, including Hipsters and Smart Assed Music Aficionados, The Slim Shady LP was a guilty pleasure. I know this because I saw it everywhere I went. From NYC's Electro scene, to Indirockers, to House loving Chelsea Boys, to Punks, to Pop Fiends, to Hip Hop snobs, hell, I even talked to a Classical Violinist and a Jazz Singer about this album.
For many people, this little disk of HATE had something to love!

Lets not forget to mention that this album for it's time, was the voice of America's Youth. In that way, it is similar Nirvana's Nevermind or even The Beatles. It was the right soundtrack for the mood of our youth. Angry, Irreverent, Politically Incorrect, Violent and Sadistically funny.

It is unfortunate however that Eminem has since become too calculated for his own good. But hey, he aint a kid anymore and has found his place as an adult, still doing what he does best...making great music!

1 out of 5 stars Its always a big hit when white people do marginally well in a traditionally black corner of the arts   May 18, 2009

    Exhibit A) Elvis
    Exhibit B) Eric Clapton
    Exhibit C) Eminem

And in the jury, every black R&B, Blues, and Hip Hop artist that smokes every one of the above.
