Amazon.com The combination of Mary J. Blige with strong material is one of the few guarantees of excitement in today's R&B world. Rather than stuff her lines with showy streams of notes like too many post-Patti LaBelle divas, Blige sings the song. Even when she breaks into melisma, it feels like the direct result of an overflow of emotion and not the bad habit of a vocalist steeped in It's Showtime at the Apollo! Like the 1994 My Life, Share engages in lots of self-affirmation in between its bouts with drama, fate, and the enemies of love--especially when the star takes pen in hand, as on "Keep Your Head." As if to confirm Blige's toughness, the strongest cut here is Babyface's over-it "Not Gon' Cry." --Rickey Wright

Gotta Give The Girl A Chance January 28, 2010 Andre S. Grindle (Brewer Maine) Mary J hit big with My Life and the intro to this album with it's montage of award ceremony clips makes that overly clear. At the same time she is opting to change over a bit after dealing with one personel problem after another between that release and this album. From cut to cut this album has a far more polished sound that's very condusive to a very relaxed and intimate kind of party or just jamming wherever you happen to be listening to this. True it doesn't always lend itself to as much variety and spunk as the previous album in many places but "I Can Love You,"Round And Round",the title song,"It's On" with R Kelly,"Missing You" and "Keep Your Head" will sure fit that bill. On several cuts such as the excellent "Love Is All We Need","Get To Know You Better","Our Love" and "Searching" Mary puts a strong disco-funk flavor with her distinctive hip-hop/soul hybrid and the multi instrumental talents of Rodney Jerkins really help to add to the potency of these tunes. She's beginning the lyrical journey that would culminate a couple albums later on No More Drama as she looks at the deamons within and without her by seeing them more as something to overcome than as something hindering life in general. So the feeling of this album is pensively optimistic without taking any of the realness off of it and,in that spirit it's the ideal match for the type of music she's presenting here. Each successive album since her debut have grown in terms of maturity and depth of style and manages to be rooted and modern at the same time. "Seven Days" is a great example of that:less a hip-hop tune that a gospel tinged retro soul ballad but it also has a certain flavor suited to contemporary tastes as well. Her closing version of "Not Gon Cry" is another highlite illustrating the same approch. This is not Mary J's greatest album and doesn't quite approch the uniqueness and defining sound as her nearly brilliant follow up album Mary would but it does show that as with many of the great artists in R&B before and after her she managed to improve by significant degrees with each album and establish a good progression forward rather than tread water.

TO BE HONEST THIS IS MY FAVORITE MARY J BLIGE CD HANDS DOWN TO ME THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM MARY J BLIGE EVER MADE IN HER CAREER
Not Bad June 28, 2008 S. Banwaree (St. Croix Virgin Islands) I only wanted this album for one song and the rest of it wasn't bad but you really have to be a Mary J. Blige fan to appreciate all the songs. It's okay.
Great Mary Album But No "My Life" March 16, 2007 Dezire (long island, ny) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This Mary J. Blige album was great but wasn't flawless like "My Life", and "The Breakthrough". The album would've been better without " Searching" and " Can't get you off My Mind". The first half of the album was flawless but it ended on a good note with "Not Gon Cry and " Our Love". This album is definitely needed for the Mary fans and R&B fans.
