Amazon.com During one of the "interludes" on My Life, Keith Murray is rapping about "Grab your cranium for my ultimatum," when someone in the studio control booth asks producer Chucky Thompson, "Hey, Chuck, put on some of that smooth [stuff]." Murray disappears; the dreamy synth chords of Blige's title track emerge, and her sultry voice moans with a combination of weary loneliness and unslaked desire. The ballad which follows is "smooth" but never slick, for the singer's sinuous, extended notes confess the blues even as they yearn for something better. It's tempting to see this little scenario--the rapper being turned off in favor of the soul diva--as a repudiation of hip-hop in favor of old-fashioned R&B. An honest listen to this album, however, makes such an interpretation impossible. Blige does no actual rapping herself on her long-awaited second outing, but the sound of "My Life" would have been impossible without hip-hop. The results confirm the promise of Blige's '92 debut; she is the premier soul diva of the hip-hop generation. --Geoffrey Himes

My Life February 5, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) MY LIFE comes across as another ground-breaking venture, linking R&B's new and old schools, filling you with delightful harmonies and hip-hop samples. When Blige connects with her music's roots, she doesn't mess around soul's perimeters searching for eligible influences. MY LIFE is a statement of purpose, a 17-song diary full of Blige's life, love, and struggles in defending her title as the queen of hip-hop soul. Blige is telling us in this CD, she grew up the same way they did, listened to the same things, was influenced by the same situations. That's what makes her so beloved, and continues soaring to soulful heights.
Mary's Life And We're LOVIN' It! January 25, 2010 Andre S. Grindle (Brewer Maine) An astounding album and an EXTREMELY HUGE creative leap from her debut What's the 411?! Contemporary hip-hop and new jack considerations were very strong on her debut album and there was the awkward step between that and somewhat mechanical 80's musical flavors. This album changed all of that. In their hearts it was the funk/jazz/R&B of the mid 70's that was the musical bag of both Puffy and Mary and the result of their enthusiasm is a fusion of that concept soon came to be known as neo soul. Along with DeAngelo's Brown Sugar this is one of the earliest album smashes to use the form and it's one of the most overall successful. Along with the instrumental samples Puffy built these grooves on and Mary J's newfound fondess for jazzy vocal turns and scat singing provide great results on the drippily disco-funk "Mary Jane","You Bring Me Joy" and the bass popping-happy closer "Be Happy" are such excellent tunes that if these were the only good songs on the album it would still earn a five star rating. But happily the news always gets better from there. "I'm The Only Woman" really puts the title track of Roy Ayers Everybody Loves the Sunshine to work and considering his position as something of a godfather to this then new genre it is a beautiful use of form. Of course Mary's cover of "I'm Goin' Down" rips the entire instrumental track of the song and I've heard it to death but hearing it again reminds me of the excellence and broad vocal inflections she brings to the song. The original ballads including the title track and the deeply spirited "You Gotta Believe" follow in the same path and completely undo some of the mild sterility of the previous albums approch. Ditto for the slightly more uptempo hip-hop inflected jams such as "Be With You","Mary's Joint","Don't Go" and the clever, well composed "I Love You" all have possess that spark needed to make them really stand out as impressive songs. From this point on in Mary J's career she would be forever known not as "the new Chaka Khan" but as The Queen Of Hip-Hop/Soul and all hype set aside the high quality of this album is one of the reasons why she's known for that.
Mary J. Blige's "My Life" is a seminal album December 31, 2009 silhouette_of_enchantment (USA) This album is one of my favorites of all time. Mary J. Blige is a true diva. The purest essence of human experience shines through her lyrics and her voice. Whenever she sings, Blige always expresses the true, bone-marrow depth of raw emotion. Listeners, like myself, know that Blige really feels what she's singing about, perhaps, because she's experienced it first hand -- whether its joy, pain, heartache, sadness, loss or fear. Every note she sings -- deliberate or not -- comes from that original place of depth and intensity.
I listen to "My Life," whenever I need comfort or just really, really good music. Highlight on this album are "My Life," "You Bring Me Joy," "I'm the Only Woman," "Don't Go," and "You've Gotta Believe." I bought this album several times, whenever it went bad -- it's that good.
The Best R&B Album of my Generation!! March 29, 2009 Jennifer Wynns (New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a masterpiece! This Album in unrateable; it's off the charts. It's value is intangible. How can you rate an album that helps you get over very difficult times, an album that is your only companion when you soul is hurting so much that you just want to be locked up in your room for motnhs and not see anyone, an album that says, hey, someone else understands what you are going through, and you both will be OK?
When this Cd came out, I was in High School and since, it's the Album that I turn to whenever I'm going through hard times. You have breakup songs, uplifting songs, jamming songs, all you need is in this album. When someone bears her soul like Mary did on this album, nothing else can come from it, but greatness.
I think Diddy is the only person who really gets Mary musically. This is one of his best works to date. I am so thankful and grateful to both of them for making this. This is that classic album every generation has.
Absolutely every song is heartfelt, and you not only hear Mary's pain in her voice, you FEEL her pain. Thanks Mary and Diddy for this Masterpiece.
" How can I love somebody else, if I can't even love myself enough to know when is time to let go. All I really want is to be happy, to find a love that's mind that would be so sweet. I asked for a sign from the sweet lord above, I know the answer is in front of me, but when you think you're in love, you only see what you want to see, and what I see is me for you and you for me. I cannot hide the way I feel inside, I don't know why but everyday I want to cry, If I give you one more try to these rules will you abide? And if I mean anything to you, will it make everything all right?
I just wanna be so, so, happy But the answer lies in me. I do believe
That we can be happy, I said I wanna be happy, yeah.
Life is too short To be tryin to play some games Now take some time and think about If it's really worth losing me Why must it be this way?
Why do you have to play with my mind All the time?"
Help me sing it...
My Favorite MJB Album November 19, 2008 Katrina Bourne (Brooklyn, NY) I remember listening to this album when I was a girl. Back when everyone still had cassettes. Anyway, I used to listen to it every night. The whole CD is kind of sad and melancholy but listing to i always helped me through some dark days. This is my absolute favorite Mary album.
