Amazon.com Perhaps the true test of a classic is this: something that's commonplace now but at the time appeared revolutionary. The notion that a female R&B singer could be as informed by the Real Roxanne as she was by Aretha Franklin, that she could give love to the streets and the roughnecks--while still delivering soul-drenched love songs that came from that wounded womanly space--was, in a word, groundbreaking. It was the sound of the New Jills, and of a new genre, aptly called hip-hop soul. Featuring production from a then-upstart Puffy, and a collection of songs that alternately swagger and seduce--"You Remind Me," "Real Love," "Reminisce"--What's the 411? may not be Blige's finest work (that honor may go to its moody follow-up, My Life). But its ghetto-fied grooves dominated the radio then, and they still sound fierce today, even with a slew of lesser imitators attempting to do what the rough and ready Blige did so effortlessly back in the day. --Amy Linden

So Mary,What IS The 411? January 25, 2010 Andre S. Grindle (Brewer Maine) Somehow along the way Mary J and this album in particular got fixated in my memory from the time I was 12 years old on. She always had the disadvantage of being just slight overhyped and comparasins were flying around everywhere. In the end I actually just heard this album that everyone hailed as a milestone when it first came out. After all is said and done one really does need to be objective. On all 12 songs on this album Mary comes across as one of the best vocal talents in R&B in her day-no contest. Not only does her voice SOUND good(an all too often used clishe for awhile anyway) but she interprets her vocal lines very cleanly. This proved an alternative to the clipped, crying vibrato style of a so many other new singers to emerge in this timeframe. Despite being hailed as the "new Chaka Khan" and such she had a sound very much her own-very rich and clear. She was also able to make the transition from tough, direct soul souting to a breathier higher sound with the ease of putting on a glove. "Real Love" was her breakthrough song needless to say,got a lot of airplay and is a well composed and arranged funk/soul/hip-hop style tune. Her version of "Sweet Thing" might be a source of the Chaka Khan comparasins but her excellent vocal interpretation could'nt be more different. Strangely enough the album falls victim to one issue of it's time:it's uneven. That's not to say it's full of misguided expiriments but from song to song most of the music here has the bad habit of sounding alike and having very similar structures. While 'Reminisce" is sounds good to start with "Love No Limit","I Don't Want To Do Anything" and "Changes I've Been Going Through" all kind of sound like remixes of that same song. Sean Puffy Combs was a hot producer at this point and time has shown he does know the funk pretty well but it's pretty evident in this case he had a little work to do still. "Intro Talk" with a young Busta Rhymes and the title track integrate more 70's style funk into the sound but the feeling is kind of downbeat and bland. This particular era's R&B,even as it was fusing more and more with hip-hop had the same problem and while this album will sound great at parties and such as was a big deal in it's era...there are aspects of the production, such as the big orchestrated intros and synthesized pan flute sound here and there that just didn't age well. Mary's voice and song of the songwriting itself was excellent here but in terms of the music and overall sound she really would improve from here on in.
Can't get enough!!! April 12, 2009 Cassandra L. Lance (Sonoma County, CA) This is one of my all time favorite Mary albums. I was just re-purchasing because my last copy got scratched and started to skip.
A Classic September 27, 2008 Lea Ann Fessenden-Joseph (Dallas and St Lucia) Mary J. Blige has the 4-1-1 on how to create a CD that will become an all-time classic. Yes, Mary has a soulful way of connecting to every woman's suffering and moves you to shout "you go girl!"
The best April 20, 2008 lefty (Orange County, CA USA) The first and the best. I've probably listened to this album a million times from beginning to end, and never get tired of it. This is one of my favorite albums of all time.
A Great Album by Mary March 25, 2008 Jsun (California) Mary's first album "What's the 411?" is, in my opinion, her best album. Her vocals are impeccable here and the songs are all good. I don't see any fillers.
-Reminisce: 5/5
-Real Love: 5/5 One of my favorites on the album...I love the remix as well
-You Remind Me: 5/5 Also one of my favorites
-Sweet Thing: 5/5 A good remake of Chaka Khan's Sweet Thing. I find both versions good and Mary did a great job on it.
-Love No Limit: 4.5/5...I personally prefer the remix of Love No Limit on her "What's the 411? Remix" CD.
-I Don't Want To Do Anything: 5/5 Another favorite
-Slow Down 4.5/5 A good song, but not the best on the album
-My Love 4.5/5
-Changes I've Been Going Through 5/5 Another favorite
-What's the 411? 4.5/5
This album definitely shows Mary J's vocals at her best. Although I love "My Life" as well, I feel that album as a few fillers. I think "What's the 411?" and also "What's the 411? Remix" shows Mary J Blige at her finest.
