Amazon.com essential recording As original Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth quit the band to pursue a solo career, or was fired (depending on who you believe), Eddie and Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony carried on by hiring Sammy Hagar. Hagar was a middling artist on his own, but he proved to be a powerhouse when placed in front of hard rock's most muscular and innovative instrumental unit. On 5150--the title is police code for "escaped lunatic"--you can hear the band's excitement at having struck a winning combination. Songs such as "Why Can't This Be Love," "Dreams," "Best of Both Worlds," and "Love Walks In" combine to make this the early high-watermark of the Van Hagar era. --Daniel Durchholz

Enter the Hagar January 3, 2010 Scott Miller (Caddo Mills, TX United States) I never liked David Lee Roth. I never liked his vocals. I never liked his overinflated ego. I never liked his cheesy antics (hey, Roth fans, have you seen the "Jump" video??). No, Sammy Hagar was a better lead singer in every way. BUT there is no denying that Van Halen's songwriting and arrangements were better during DLR's stint. While Van Hagar had some good songs, most of the lyrics sucked, and many of the tunes had no sense of what they were trying to be (pop, rock, melodic, atonal?).
That said, I think the good songs on 5150 are generally VERY good. "Dreams" works as solid pop rock. The title track is possibly my favorite VH tune. "Summer Nights" and "Best of Both Worlds" are classics. Even "Why Can't This Be Love" works in its own way. So that leaves half an album of crap. But the other half easily makes up for it.
5150: Van Halen on CD. December 11, 2009 Dr. Feelgood (USA) The Van Halen with David Lee Roth certainly, had something that isn't on this record, but this record does contain what Van Halen is all about, with Sammy Hagar on vocals.
the best VAN HAGAR cd December 5, 2009 MRT while all VAN HAGAR cd's with sammy are good, this one is their best.never rocking as much as i thought they would with sammy, still good.always pictured a VAN HALEN/MONTROSE hybrid type band, but they veared more towards a JOURNEY direction.
THE BEST VAN HALEN ALBUM (AKA THE BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME) August 19, 2009 Dean R. Doherty (Sydney, N.S.W Australia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the most complete album im my opinion. Iluv DLR but this album is brilliant , sure it went downhill from this point onwards , with there worst album ou812 .
GOOD ENOUGH i dont know a better way to start an album HALLOOOOO BBABBYYYYYY! brilliant , Eddie is great on this , its very much eddie tryin to do PANAMA(but not as good) part 2 , even the break down is half decent for hagar.
WHY CANT THIS BE LOVE , a trully great song absolutely brilliant , u still hear it on the radio these days , great keyboards , this is sammy at his best , EVH solo rocks , what a sound , not overly complicated but great none the less.
GET UP , similer to eddies previous solo but goes through the wholo song , almost thrash metal , a great song to get u rockin.
DREAMS another brilliant song , this is almost the perfect song , keyboards r brilliant , this combine all VH great attributes.
SUMMER NIGHTS starts off with eddie a bit off riffing but classic it as , then the song starts rocking , a great summer party song , n a forgotten classic, MA shines on this one .
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS , actually pretty deep 4 a SH song , with great lyrics, EVHs riffing under the solo is simply fantastic .
LOVE WALKS IN , is a great soft song , its not a ballad even though its title would suggest otherwise , great simple intro , it cld be one of the best written VH songs ever , its also a reason why DLR/VH fans dislike it so much , trust me there was worse to come ie WHEN ITS LOVE, CANT STOP LOVIN YOU, NOT ENOUGH , all are sappy love song which dont compare to this.
5150 is a great song ruined by SAMMY HAGAR , the music is brilliant , SAMMY ruins this one big time. Dave wld of made this a hit .
INSIDE , is interesting , its not really a song as such , sammy doest really sing its more of talking with a chorus , but i do enjoy it , he wld ruin many other songs to come ie BLACK N BLUE(ONE OF THEIR WORST) SPANKED , DLR wld have made them great.
SO THERE YOU GO 5150 , ANY MUSIC FAN FULL STOP SHOULD HAVE THIS IN THERE COLLECTION.
VH wld never reach this peak again, it went downhill very quick , F.U.CK is a very good album but the rest of van hagar is avg at best , it never reached the greatness of DLR/VH , there wasnt a bad album or song in the first 6 albums.
People who shunned DLR wld miss out on some great albums EAT EM N SMILE BEING up there with the best of van halen , skyscraper great , ALAE n yr YFLM good , Dave hit form again with the DLR band with john 5 on it , brilliant cd
Van Halen 5150 May 24, 2009 Heather Brown (Townville, PA USA) One of their best! Always have loved this CD since it first came out, a great addition to your collection!!
