5 out of 5 stars A haunting, unique American voice   October 27, 2009
    Words&Music (Washington State, USA)
If you once know Aaron Neville's voice, you will never mistake it for another. Any song or album on which he sings backup suddenly comes to life, (Witness his backup on Robbie Robertson's "Storyville" which was about this same vintage.) Sadly, Hurricane Katrina was the reason that so many people first heard Aaron all over this country, his "Louisiana 1927" was practically the anthem for that terrible event. This album and others, while sometimes uneven, have the ability to infuse lyric w/ sustained emotion, soul with satin, and he brings this wonderful quality to both toe-tappers like "La Vie Dansant," to the powerful "Angola Bound," which is a revision of a long ago song of his, both powerful, but "Angola Bound" is just terrific. I sometimes teach these two songs together as an exercise in how to revise (for writers, not musicians!). This album was our first intro to Aaron. I can't even remember how I came by it. For us, it cannot be summer if Aaron Neville isn't playing. Aaron's Neville's music can never just meld into musical wallpaper. You listen up! to hear it, and the combination of heartfelt emotion, whatever that emotion might be, and brilliant presentation make any song he sings indelibly his. If you don't know his music, this album is a great place to start. If you do know his music, no collection can be complete w/o this album. Aaron and the Neville brothers are truly New Orleans, of course, but they are a gift to the rest of the country as well.

The CD was as good as the songs I remembered singing to. Thank You.

5 out of 5 stars Desert island CD   September 12, 2006

This is one of my desert island CD's (you know, if you could only take 10 CD's on a desert island which would you take)I have owned it since its release and it never gets old. Aaron Neville's voice is like a cool breeze on a hot day. I especially enjoy Aaron's versions of Randy Newman's Louisiana 1927 and Jimmy Buffett's La Vie Dansant. However the crowning jewel is the Ave Maria - Aaron sings this beautiful prayer with his heart and soul. This CD is aptly titled - it certainly warms my heart each time I listen.

Aaron is a "new" artist to me. (Living in a bubble?) I heard his heart-breaking version of "Louisiana 1927" right after the tragedy and have played it almost every day since. Then I "discovered" "Ave Maria" and "Amazing Grace" and am a true fan. I'll wait for his next recording with anxious anticipation.
