This is one of my fave R/B albums of all time. Stand outs are "No no no no no" part 1 & 2, "With Me" parts 1 & 2 respectively, and "Illusion."

Got to admit here that I became very annoyed with Destiny's Child and Beyonce for two reasons. I could'nt turn the radio dial when I was 21 or 22 without hearing saturation airplay of Independent Women and also....wishing that Beyonce hadn't spent the last few years,with all her musical potential mearly treading water and feeding her not-yet-fully-mature ego. You may agree,you might not. It's also important to say that I say that often about old musical veterans I've loved and admired for years. Anyway it's time for the review. When this album came out I saw it all over the place and,at the time couldn't different hip-hop/R&B style girl groups of the 90's imitating En Vogue. Were they SWV?Xcape?TLC?Jade? Actually as it turns out the saturation of this kind of group actually served to blur the fact that each and every one of those groups did have at least one particular unique thing to offer. In that department Destiny's Child really did. Produced with Beyonce's brother Mathew Knowles there was also a strong sense of long standing unity and familiarity among the members. And unline even En Vogue you could tell,more like the actual Supremes Destiny's Child had the years of experience and support to make it to where they did.Featuring an excellent band with the likes of Dwayne Higgins,Jamie Hawkins,Lee Neal and Ray McKinely on bass the album not to mention the writing and appearance by Wyclef Jean,Jermaine Dupri and R.Kelly is a totally heartfelt funk and soul delight if I ever heard one. There's a mixture of a lot of types of great tunes on this album but more than a handful of great 90's style funk tracks that are as great in their futurism as they are in their links to the classic elements of the genre. "No No No Part 2" is an excellent example as the links between late 90's hip-hop and funk,both always cross pollinated come together for a great combination. The original "hit" version included here,called Part 1 is very good but a lot more typical of the era and doesn't quite have the kind of power the Wyclef version does. It's good for urban radio and such of the day,but isn't as in the groove. Dupri lends his hands to the very potent "With Me" which actually adds this strong jazzy flavor to the overall production with these slinkly Wonderesque moog type keyboard wiggles that add this strong spice and aweishness to the song. The remix with Master P has a bit more of a grind but his annoying grunting and some elements of his rap style are a little annoying at times,to me anyway. "Bridges","Show Me The Way" and "Illusion",which borrows a melodic lick based on a song from the Imagination album In the Heat of the Night all showcase the uptempo variety of the same funk sound and also present some serious,high quality dance jams that have some musical substance to drain off some of the tiring novelty of some of the party tunes of this era. There are a few slower jams here,actually all of them inspired by the same "funk-hop" concept. "Tell Me","Birthday","My Time Has Come","Sail On" and the excellent "Killing Time" all work around grooves like that. A nice middle ground is created at the beginning of the album with a cover of the Isley's "Second Nature". Somewhat overshadowed by the far larger commercial success of The Writing's on the Wall and Survivor and the fact that this was the groups only album as a quartet as La Tavia would soon be out of the group this album really showcases the group in a different place. A different Destiny's Child.All the ingrediants they worked so well with were there and Beyonce's talents as an uptempo based vocalists right along for the ride. It's a great album that fits in very well with what will please most jam fans and it more than worth listening to.
