Amazon.com A two-CD live collection from a band left splintered by the departure of bassist-songwriter Roger Waters, Pulse is perhaps best noted for the blinking red light that was set in its spine upon initial release. It contains the remaining band (with guest musicians) performing the entire Dark Side of the Moon album, the novelty of which wears off soon after the crowd noise interrupts any potential intimacy. The crowd also sings along for several songs, which makes this either a great audio-video document or a misguided attempt at replicating the live experience. --Rob O'Connor

great dark side of the moon performance? its a historic re-enactment of a pink floyd concert with an army of players.
Awsome Memories July 14, 2009 Kit Eubanks (Seattle, Wa) I bought this CD & the DVD, I never got to see them Live so this is the next best thing! It's amazing how many Awsome Memories these songs bring back of 1980's when I was in my Late teens & early 20's ( my playind hard, staying up all night with friends, rocking out to the music as loud as we could play it, Days) awww those were the days, now I'm in bed by 10pm, lol..However it sure is fun to listen to these songs and think about all the crazy times! This music is "Timeless" I enjoy it now in my mid 40's as I did in my younger days! So glad I purchased this!!!
The definitive live Pink Floyd June 28, 2009 djdjdjdjdjdj9 (Wisconsin) There are several live Floyd albums to choose from: Live at Pompeii, Delicate Sound of Thunder, and various bootlegs that float around on the web. Pulse is by far the most extensive of the set.
I won't rate Pink Floyd's content here, just the CD.
The set list is pretty good - here we see all the quintessential live Floyd songs like "Comfortably Numb" (with extended guitar solos), "Run Like Hell" (with extended guitar effect intro), etc. Some minor differences I noticed which might please the potential buyer: "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" now contains the final verse, whereas this version on "Delicate Sound of Thunder" did not. If you're aware that this song (and the album from which it is pulled, "Wish You Were Here") is a tribute (or maybe apology?) to Syd Barret, the final verse closes this song wonderfully.
One qualm I have is that "One of These Days," probably PF's "heaviest" song from the 1970s, was dropped off this set. You can however see it on Pulse the DVD. However, I actually enjoy "One of These Days" a bit more on "Delicate Sound of Thunder" than I do on the Pulse DVD, so there's no real loss there.
Having "The Dark Side of the Moon" in its entirety is a real treat, however outside of "Money," there doesn't seem to be much in the way of improvisation or definitive changes. I was happy about this because it always bugged me on "Delicate Sound of Thunder" that the band stopped playing "Time" before moving into the "Breathe in the Air" reprise, probably my favorite PF lyric/music of all their albums. I will say that the band sounds really tight (perhaps too tight, probably in order to stay on pace with the laser show that is going on concurrently), and the instrumentation is good, especially on Dark Side.
At times there is some unusual/unwanted reverb echo throughout the stadium, but I also believe that one of the delays in releasing this set was an attempt to clean up that type of thing. All in all, the more instruments one has in a live show, the more difficult it is to nail down a good, clean sound. The production crew on Pulse did a fabulous job synchronizing and mixing all those different parts together to arrive at a product where each instrument is equally represented and not drowning out another.
If you really want to "hear" this album in a new light, go pick up the DVD and watch it a couple times. It will add new flavor to the CD and make it that much more enjoyable to hear.
Incidentally, when the album first came out, there was a blinking LED on the side which corresponded to the beating heart at the beginning of Dark Side, but current albums do not have the LED. I have the LED version, and with a careful attempt with a scalpel or a box cutter, one can open the case along the binding and replace the AA battery. I only mentioned this because I think it looks really cool to have the blinking case sitting up on one's bookshelf or CD collection, as it frequently draws questions from visitors and friends.
I gave it four stars because "One of These Days" was left on the killing floor.
Pulse February 20, 2009 D. Shipman I have the DVD, had to have the CD for the car. As in all Pink Floyd it rocks.
