As a placeholder between the full-length Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral, Broken packs a serious punch. Angrier and less poppy than Machine, this EP is full of noisy hooks, if such a thing is possible (check out that guitar riff on the full-throttle "Wish"), and much closer aesthetically to the industrial subgenre that informs Trent Reznor's music. As song titles like "Help Me I Am in Hell" suggest, Broken is a work of undiluted rage, which is, of course, a big part of its appeal. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Too much for an EP...   September 12, 2009
Camilo Rueda Lopez (San Sebastian de Los Reyes, MADRID Spain)
So you buy this, thinking you'll be getting an EP which kinda builds up the bridge between two full-length albums by including some sort of remixes, 12", B-sides, and then what you get back is something that maybe could work even better than any of those two, filled up with (perhaps) some of the best-ever tunes by Mr. TR.

BTW - for newcomers, "Wish" is not just another song; it's a NIN anthem. A very few tracks gave me chicken skin as this one live.

    AMAZING.

5 out of 5 stars Short but powerful   March 19, 2009
    Kristen S. Moore (Bremerton, WA)
NIN's second major album, 'Broken' is very different from Trent's debut, 'Pretty Hate Machine.' But 'Broken' is even better than the first, and one of the best metal albums ever released. While PHM had a feeling of sadness, 'Broken' is pure rage. It's short, but packs a violent punch and will leave you with a feeling of emptiness and a desire for more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album   February 12, 2009
    Heather Neruda (Atlanta, GA)
I have never been a Nine Inch Nails fan but I love this CD. It is powerful and explosive. I particularly like the extra track, "Physical." The only downside to this CD is the long interval of blank tracks in the middle. It isn't so bad on a CD as it would have been on a tape, but it is still pretty annoying.

3 out of 5 stars Standing Adjacent to the Grand Spiral   November 5, 2008
    )(aqri (AZ)
The only reason I chose not to rate this any higher is simply because Reznor has come out with albums at least two stars better than this -namely The Downward Spiral and The Fragile. Standing next to these albums this EP can only earnestly reach as far as three, maybe four, stars. At no point is Broken disappointing but also at no point is it as majestic as the forementioned albums. Definately a strong footnote in the scheme of all things Nine Inch Nails. However I personally overlook Broken when I think about or want to listen to a good Nine Inch Nails record. The reason being I find myself only listening to the best of what particular bands produce and there's so much great music out there. But if you have a profound appriciation for NIN then pick this up; it's certainly a tenacious escort to their fame.

    4 out of 5 stars NIN's sharpest attack   October 6, 2008

Classic stop-gap between two classic electronic releases, Broken helped balance out PHM's synthy-pop with DS's experimental terror in equal measure.
