    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com essential recording
Named for a cut that originally appeared on his Tumbleweed Connection album, Madman Across the Water yielded some of Elton John's earliest AOR staples. "Tiny Dancer," like the previous "Your Song," was introduced and carried by John's masterful piano composition. The song's sense of longing also employed the falsetto chorus that would become as much of a trademark as his costumes. "Levon," another entry into the John/Taupin "ballad of" category, is one of their finest pieces. The orchestration gives the song not only its sense of foreboding, but also its release of tension as the song ends. "Rotten Peaches" became a favorite, as did "Holiday Inn." There's also a different interpretation of the title track than appeared on Tumbleweed Connection. --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars Elton John's previous and great songs   December 17, 2009
Deven Gadula (san francisco, ca, united states)
Madman Across The Water (1971) is my favorite album of this amazing musician, or should I say...a pair of musicians. The name of Bernie Taupin has to be mentioned because the collaboration between these two stars made their songs so powerful and meaningful. Elton's amazing music was usually proceeded by Bernie's special lyrics at times providing us with a light poetic tone of mellow ballads and at others shining light upon some of our real struggles and worries. Perhaps their most powerful and deepest songs can be found on Elton John's second album from 1970, the one with his face silhouetted over the black cover and simply called Elton John. However, I find that album very uneven. I understand that someone not bothered by average rock'n'roll songs might find that album his best. For me this album Madman Across The Water provides the nicest balance of placing me in the atmosphere of his early songs, which I find much more ambitious and less pop, sustaining the most even feel throughout and distracting me the least by the rock'n'roll hits hard for me to digest. This album has a nice light tone to it. It is almost like some peace was found inside of someone's heart and mind after releasing the tension earlier. So many of his songs of this album and some of his later jewels as well have this airy disposition and when mixed with some of the darker more complex songs I find the combination quite breathtaking. Elton's musical career has delivered over 30 studio albums and close to 20 of various best of and live compilations. However, with a few exceptions, like Tonight and Song For Guy, which is one of my favorite instrumental melodies of all times, most of my favorite songs of Elton John came from the early 1970s. I have put all these rock songs and ballads together in 1998 and called them:

    Elton's Previous And Great Songs:

    1. Goodbye
    2. First Episode At Hienton
    3. Song For Guy
    4. Seasons Reprise
    5. Sixty Years On
    6. Mood 3
    7. It's Me That You Need
    8. Your Song
    9. ...Sacrifice (by Sinead O'Connor)
    10. I need You To Turn To
    11. Tonight
    12. Funeral For A Friend
    13. The Greatest Discovery
    14. Tiny Dancer
    15. Madman Across The Water
    16. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
    17. Levon

    5 out of 5 stars MADMAN   December 12, 2009

It's not pop Elton John - so don't expect that. This is from the first phase, when music was the most important. The original album had a great feel, a textured cover and loads of pages of lyrics, photos etc, just like Tumbleweed. This Album is great even after 30 years. Levon amd Tiny dancer set the mood, Holiday Inn and Indian sunset are FANTASTIC. This man is not the 21st Century Elton John, but rather a man whose music meant something to him

Purchased as a gift for a friend. The next time a friend mentions a song they'd like to have check on Amazon, the low cost of what you may be able to find is amazing. Shipment is quick and I've been very satisfied with all the CD's I've ordered from Amazon.

One of my Favorites , Love it . Madman Across the Water (Audio CD) ~ Elton John

5 out of 5 stars Excellant Elton   January 14, 2009

Elton John's earlier albums are my favorites that he made. Though some of his later ones are okay, I found the older ones are the ones I like the most from start to finish. If I had to pick the albums, Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across the Water are two at the very top.

Madman starts off with three of 4 songs that are some of his best (well known may be a better statement, though they are great spongs), Tiny Dancer, Levon and Madman Across The Water.

But the lesser known songs are also great, there are nods to the country stylish sounds of Tumbleweed but this record is more rocky/blusish. Razor Face, Holiday Inn and Rotten Peaches, with its infectious "big" chorus, and will capture you just as much as the other sounds. Probably the most TUnbleweed'ish song on the record.

Just a great record to have in your collection, though pretty much each record upto Captain Fantastic is worthwhile.
