Why is Janet Jackson's Janet the best Michael Jackson album since Thriller and the best Madonna album since..., well, since ever? Perhaps it's because Michael's kid sister is the only one of these three aerobic video stars with enough smarts to realize that sex, hooks, and beats are all that matter in this field of lightweight dance pop. Or perhaps it's because the sexuality Janet radiates through her sweet melodies and hip-tugging grooves is so much more credible than Michael's arrested prepubescence or Madonna's nothing-personal-just-business comeons. After her embarrassing posture as a sociocultural analyst on 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814, Janet has returned to her strength--using her odd mix of girlishness and maturity to make dance numbers about personal relationships ring exceptionally true. Even so, the 75-minute, 27-track Janet doesn't really work as an album; there's too much filler and the between-song transitions quickly grow tiresome. The album is full of killer singles, though, starting with such proven cuts as the extremely slinky "That's the Way Love Goes" and rock-guitar-driven "If," and featuring such future hits as the Prince-like "This Time," the Motown-like "Because of Love," the breathy ballad "Where Are You Now" and the inspired Stax cover, "What'll I Do. --Geoffrey Himes

    Album Description

4 out of 5 stars The Ultimate janet. Album   January 23, 2010
    abbylamb
When people think of Janet Jackson they probally think of this album and her famous Rolling Stone magazine cover. While I don't think it is her best I think it is a great album that is worth checking out.

Janet really changed her look with this one. It is hard to believe she is the same girl who told us to wait a while and was a MTV role model. janet. is much more relaxed and dreamier than Control and Rhythm Nation 1814.

In many ways this is an improvement from Rhythm Nation but in many ways it isn't as good. What keeps janet. strong is that it has all of her best singles. There is way more filler on this than her previous. Thankfully, most of it is enjoyable.

That's The Way Love Goes - The Janet song. When people think of her they either think of this or "Nasty". It was a big risk for her to do a song so relaxed and release it as the first single. 5/5 Stars

You Want This - Smells like filler to me. Still, it is an enjoyable song but not one that I keep going back to. It shows Janet's new personality. 3.5/5 Stars

If - This my all time favorite off the album. It is insanely catchy and the breakdown part is beyond crazy. The music video to this is one of her best too. 5/5 Stars

This Time - There is actually an opera singer on this which might shock some listeners. It shows a side of Janet that we would get to see more of on The Velvet Rope. A great and actually ground breaking song. 5/5 Stars

Throb - A very simple track but one of the standouts on the album. It proves you don't have to say much for a song to be racy. 5/5 Stars

What'll I Do - One of my personal favorites that probally could been released as a single. You could say it has a country twang to it. 3.5/5 Stars

Funky Big Band - One of the more interesting songs on album. Still I think it would fall under the filler category. I really like this song just because of the name to be honest. 4/5 Stars

New Agenda - Rhythm Nation with a twist. It sounds neat but it feels kind of out of place and never lives up to what it could of been. Decent though. 3/5 Stars

Because Love - A rather boring song that should of not been released as a single. Nothing to rave about here but still it is pretty solid. 3/5 Stars

Again - With the exception of Lets Wait A While this is my favorite Janet ballad. It is open, honest, and pure not hiding anything. Beautiful and actually nominated for an Oscar. 5/5 Stars

Where Are You Now - I'd really like to know why this wasn't released as a single instead of Because of Love. This is a pretty and touching song. Her usually limited voice sounds perfect on this. 5/5 Stars

The Body That Loves You - Eh. I love the intro but it gets old after a while. A little too repititive but her voice sounds great. 3.5/5 Stars

Anytime, Anyplace - Classic Janet and easily one the best she has ever sang. I prefer the remix but this is equally as good. 5/5 Stars

Hidden Track - I'm not going to lie. I love this cute and silly song. Not one of her best but completly enjoyable and fun. 4/5 Stars

In conclusion, this isn't her best but I think it has her greatest singles. This is the album people think of when they hear the word "Janet". If you're a new fan get Rhythm Nation or Velvet Rope first but don't forget to go back to this.

    4/5 Stars

4 out of 5 stars Any Time, Any Place   April 25, 2009

Following the fantastic Rhythm Nation album, Janet Jackson conceived another brilliant release with 1993's janet. This record sees the star exploring her sexuality openly with smooth, jazzy grooves that work especially well on stand-outs like the smash "That's the Way Love Goes," easily the best single of her career. The beginning of the album also includes infectious uptempo tracks like "You Want This" and the aggressive "If." Janet and producers Jam & Lewis experiment successfully with new sounds, as on the tribute "Funky Big Band" and the surprising Kathleen Battle collaboration "This Time," an opera/pop tour de force. The final quarter of the album is the best of all, with its silky, sensual slow jams. "Any Time, Any Place" channels Let's Get it On-era Marvin Gaye, and "The Body that Loves You," with its Brazilian influence, exudes a breezy, relaxed vibe. Here, Janet finds the perfect balance of sexy and classy, something she'd forget in the future. janet. shows its namesake taking the lead creatively for the first time; the results are gratifying in their indulgence. The album lacks the cohesiveness of Rhythm Nation and Control, but it boasts the best singles of all. 4 Stars.

    4 out of 5 stars A bit of Surprise!   March 17, 2009

At first, I was more of an 80's Janet fan. I really liked her stuff that she did in the 80's, and early 00's. But I wasn't a fan or familiar with some of the stuff she's done in the 90's. Over the years, A lot of tv shows and people have this is hear best album. But i never really was a fan of her slow music, simply because shes not that strong of a singer. So i decided to skip on this cd, until I watched poetic justice. I was like, wow! This is a great movie, and really helped me to look at hip-hop in a different way. I thought that i might as well give this album a try. That's the Way love goes is classic, and alot of people know of this song. While, it's not my favorite song,it's fairly good. I'm not a big fan of Again or her other ballad on this cd. But If and You want me are excellent dance tracks. There are simply amazing, and she's very good at what she does, uptempo songs. There are some other surprise tracks on this album that i wound up liking. And thought overall, this album is really her one her best since rhythm nation. The only reason people say this is different is because it's just alittle slower then most of her music was before.
