    4 out of 5 stars Old School & R&B Glide Smooth!   September 28, 2009
    *badgirl* (M-I-A)
Aaliyah's music is like no other as this album showcases just that! She embraces melodies that are soft yet bouncy like, the all too famous "Back & Forth" with sensual listener friendly smooth singing like, "At Your Best (You Are Love)" yet also bringing themes many can relate to like love, life's challenges, and every day experiences, such as "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" with old school tracks like,"Young Nation" and "Street Thing". Aaliyah displays in this album dedication, passion, and true devotion in a creative style very refreshing and down-to-earth!

The old school tracks, R&B songs, along mellow jams, flow nicely with much funk hip-hop and even hints of soul and rap. Produced by R. Kelly, this Japan Import comes with the bonus tracks: "The Thing I Like", "At Your Best (You Are Love) (Gangstar Child Remix)", and "At Your Best (You Are Love) (Stepper's Ball Remix)" as well as the collector's item worth, obi-strip, and glossy finish inner lyrical booklet with the words to the songs. The extra tracks are definitely worth the purchase, as they have varied tempos shifting from mellow to up-tempo at times and then there's the added rap accents in between that give it a much more hip-hop edge not otherwise felt on the regular versions!

The overall feel is a laid back sensation along romantic moods enough to make lighting candles and dreaming about special thoughts to come at an ultimate high. While her other albums don't necessarily have the old school tracks or non-stand-out tracks this one still manages to make its mark quite eloquently!

My favorite tracks would be "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number", "Back & Forth", and "At Your Best (You Are Love)" for the sweet soft singing accompanied by the romantic references, and undying love for that object of affection! This is highly recommended for die-hard Aaliyah fans and romantics at heart!

Aaliyah's debut features a pleasant mix of r&b/hip hop/pop that appealed to a wide audience. What also helped fuel interest in her was the fact that she refused to reveal her age and had some mysterious ways about her during interviews. I know it piqued my interest enough at that time such that I'd try to watch all of her interviews to see if she was really only 14 or 15 years old OR if she was actually in her 20s.

I loved the fact that there was no negative rivalry mess started up between Aaliyah & Brandy since they were both bringing individual flair to the r&b field. It was cute how people called Brandy, a young Whitney Houston while Aaliyah was being touted as a younger Janet Jackson.

This is an interesting album featuring production from then up & coming R Kelly where he utilizes hard hip hop beats in contrast to Aaliyah's sweet airy vocals.

The standout tracks to me are: BACK & FORTH, AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER, AT YOUR BEST (YOU ARE LOVE), I'M SO INTO YOU, STREET THING & NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO LOVE ME QUITE LIKE YOU DO (although a little monotonous, I still love the beats).

I'd recommend it to Aaliyah fans and to those who are curious about mid-90s r&b.

The only good song is "Back & Fourth", the rest of the songs do not stand out all. they all sound very cheesy. On this album she has no dept no nothing,if you want a good Aaliyah pick up her 2001 self titled album "Aaliyah".
