    Product Description
A highly entertaining insight into the Merseybeat music scene in the early days in Liverpool. In no way is The Birth of the Beatles 'just another Beatles book'. Sam Leach, the author is too much of a character for that. As one of Liverpool's leading promoters when Merseybeat and the Beatles were rocking the clubs of Liverpool but had not yet exploded onto the world, Sam was a great friend and supporter of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Pete Best, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The first chapter will have you in tears, the subsequent chapters in fits of laughter. The whole book will transport you back in time to an era when anything was possible and it was all to play for.

    4 out of 5 stars I Like It Better Than A Hard Day's Night   February 19, 2006
    Nancy Sherburne (Tucson, Arizona, USA)
Okay, A Hard Day's Night did star The Beatles themselves, with their own singing, but this biographical look at the start of the never-to-be-forgotten band was more real. The absence of early singing and musical talent showed how determination and drive can pay off in the long run. It was sad when Stu died, when Brian's secret was revealed, when John's marriage became strained, when Ringo's taking over Pete's spot was not well received by the audience but the scenes carried me through the movie. And John's "Where are we going?" and the answer of "To the top" from the others, and his asking them "What top?" and their reply, "The very top" was so indicative of what was to come I feel very fortunate to have taped it from the TV I don't know how many years ago. If you want to buy it on DVD or VHS, you might try thevideobeat. I had not heard of the site until I searched for the title to see if the movie had been released, though. Meawhile, I'll be content with my own.

5 out of 5 stars Write it again, Sam!   October 15, 2001
    R. N. Owen (FERNDALE, MID GLAMORGAN United Kingdom)
Sam Leach gives us a rockin' account of Liverpool just before the deluge. All the main players are here and Sam situates himself right in their midst. Having the good fortune of a photographer as best friend during the early days of Merseymania ensures some fantastic period pictures, some of which were taken at private parties.
Can't recommend this book too highly for anyone interested in the early days of The Beatles and their contemporaries, you can almost smell the cheap perfume and cheaper alcohol at venues such as Litherland Town Hall and The Tower Ballroom.
Sam should be made to write another book in this vein. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF THE BEATLES' EARLY DAYS   March 25, 2001
    BeatleBangs1964 (United States)
Sam Leach has written one of the definitive pre-1964 books about the Beatles. He does a very thorough job of covering their early band years, from the rough German nightclubs in Hamburg to the solid band the world recognizes and honors today.

Leach writes in a clear, strong voice and has plainly done his homework. He has fully researched his material. He has also recreated a period in musical history that has been hailed by many Beatles' fans as "the inception of REAL rock and roll." A biased perception, tis true, but one that many, myself included will readily endorse. His descriptions of the early days are fresh and vivid; his gift for writing makes the reader feel present at the places and scenes he describes.

And the music. Yeah, the music...such a treat...just like this book.

The book is great but can anyone tell me where you can get a copy of the movie? I've seen the movie twice but can't find a copy anywhere - not even on the net.

Odd that Nameless in Seattle should dispute Mr Leach's relationship with the Beatles-the photographs in the book show Sam onstage with Paul-They also show all the Beatles carousing youthfully at Sam's engagement party etc-and as for being a 'legend in his own mind' the stance taken in the book is that of the eternal fan made even more endearing by Sam's own hilarious descriptions of his ineptitude as a musician-Im puzzled- Did we read the same copy of the book?-or is it a cse of "Hell hath no fury like a vested interest posing as a moral principle? However if you want a good read and are an ardent peruser and purchaser of all things Beatle this is the book for you.
