Another too-Christian homeschooling resource. Sorry. January 11, 2009 Adrienne Jensen (Salt Lake City, UT USA) 7 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book, like many other homeschooling books, has a misleading title. It should be called, "A Charlotte Mason Education: A CHRISTIAN Homeschooling How-To Manual". Seriously, sometimes I feel like I am the ONLY homeschooler who is not a religious zealot. First let me say that I do recognize that Charlotte Mason was a devout Christian. Fine. Mention that. Even talk about how she incorporated it into her schools. I don't care. But my gosh, did Levison have to point out that she once banned all Charles Dickens books because of "A Christmas Carol" (no ghost stories allowed in her home)?!?! I felt like she was continually dropping references to how "righteous" she is, always listing the Bible first in lists of books or subjects. As someone who values great literature, I definitely can acknowledge the Bible in a list of good and influential books. But what if I wrote a similar manual from the perspective of, say, a Muslim (which I'm not--I'm agnostic)? You know, what if I listed the Koran first in every list? I bet it wouldn't fly with all the Christian readers. I find it a little disrespectful. Basically, I really like Charlotte Mason's educational philosophy but I really, really, really wish I could find a good synopsis of it that was not so God-heavy. Karen Andreola is just as bad in "A Charlotte Mason Companion". Honestly, I don't mind a religious reference here or there. I really don't. But this book is actually painful for me to read because it pervades ever last sentence. Oh, and also, Levison's writing lacks style and organization in a pretty serious way. It's just not a well-written book at all.
Excellent December 28, 2008 hsmomof5 (usa) Great book. Broke the Charlotte Mason approach down into well explained bite sized chunks. Loved it!
Brief Overview of the method July 21, 2008 Mama Bear (Dacula, GA USA) This is a VERY brief overview of the Charlotte Mason method. It gives a very bare-boned outline of the important aspects, but does not go into enough detail for most people who are new to the method. I would recommend searching out information on the internet, rather than spending money on this book.
New to Charlotte Mason July 14, 2008 Brown Eyed Girl (Toledo, OH) I was somewhat familiar with CM's method, but had never read about it in depth so I purchased this book to get a quick overview of Charlotte Mason's teaching philosophy. I have been homeschooling for over 5 years and wanted to know a bit more about her method, but I didn't want to waste my time or money on the original series only to find out that this is not the method that would be appropriate for me or my children. The book has proved to do exactly what I had hoped. If your situation is similar to mine then you will know beyond a doubt whether the CM method is for you, or not, after reading this book. Catherine Levison does a wonderful job of condensing Charlotte's method and philosophy into a satisfying, affordable and quick-read guide. The author adequately conveys CM's method in way that is VERY easy to understand- making it an excellent starter book. I also purchased Karen Andreola's book, "Charlotte Mason Companion", and have only just started to read it, but so far it seems to be just as lovely, certainly much more in depth, but not as easy of a read I must say. Since Catherine's book, "A Charlotte Mason Education" has convinced me to use the CM method, I will also be purchasing "More Charlotte Mason Education" as well as the original CM 6 volume set. This book provided me with enough to get started and to zealously "stir up the gift" inside my children AND me! I didn't want to put this one down- so I didn't. I read it in a night! Well worth the time. ;o)
great book May 18, 2008 Janet (mill creek , WA) Just finished this book and its a wonderful springboard for any homeschooling family or family that wants to support their child with a great way to learn. The chapters are arranged in an easy read format and I will be saving this for our family library.
