 A Classic that Stands the Test of Time May 25, 2009

Anne McCaffrey's first book in her series about the planet Pern is a classic that stands the test of time. I first encountered this as a twenty-something in San Francisco and the book has been with me ever since, becoming a cherished and valued friend. It still resonates thirty years later.
Lessa is the last of the bloodline of the lords of Ruatha. She survived the bloody invasion and slaughter of her family by hiding in the den of the watchwher, a kind of reptilian watchdog that is distantly related to the great dragons. She is determined to avenge her family and plots against Fax, the tyrannical overlord, bringing Ruatha to ruin.
F'lar is the rider of a bronze dragon. He's on Search, hunting for a determined and capable woman to ride the new queen dragon due to hatch soon from the last egg of the previous queen. In his heart, F'lar knows that the ancient menace of Thread will return and that dragons will once again be necessary to save Pern from its ancient enemy.
DRAGONFLIGHT is the perfect mix of action and romance, featuring an indomitable heroine and a disciplined hero who strike sparks as they struggle to save their world! It won both Hugo and Nebula awards and is a classic worth revisiting over and over again.

Almost everyone knows about Pern, even those who aren't generally interested in fantasy or science fiction novels. I'm surprised that no one has tried to take this series and make it into a movie. At the very least, a Sci-Fi channel original series or an anime treatment of it is due. I've included this as part of the classics because I believe that McCaffrey's ability to create a world and tell a story with lots of layers of conflict is far above and beyond that of most fantasy and science fiction writers. She doesn't just rely on the fantasy and tension of the storyline as a crutch, but creates realistic characters who are fighting real battles, whether that be against the threads, other people, or even time itself. She's also so intricately created the politics of Pern that it seems like a real place. A quick warning, though, there are elements of sexuality and murder throughout the text, so it may skew a little higher in age. I recommend this book to readers 14+.

i love the books ,but i dont have time to read, the audio books are great it allows me to get the feelings of reading it myself, the story line is great, and the reader does a wonderful job at conveying the feeling and emotions of the story line

These are two of my very favorite books. I read them for the first time when I was about nine or ten, and though I've read hundreds and hundreds of science fiction and fantasy books since then, the first pern novels remain very high on my list. The writing is superb. Each character is completely believable and lovable, the landscape is painted with such precision and talent that i can feel the sand of the hatching grounds beneath my feet, and the vertigo of divng from the cliffs on a dragon. Naturally, I was elated when I saw dragonflight and dragonquest available for the kindle. I am sorely disappointed though, with the quality of the edition. There are many very careless grammatical and spelling errors. I'll allow for an occasional missed punctuation mark but more than once in the books Pern is mistakenly referred to as PERU. Seriously? Nothing can drag me out of a great story quite like a bad typo. I love my kindle, but I'm glad I still have my hard copy of the Dragonriders of Pern...or of Peru.

I wanted to begin a good series and the Dragon of Pern series kept returning in my searches. When I finally got my hands on this first book, I really couldn't put it down and literally read it in one day. I'm looking forward to reading the next!
