An irreverent, cute, snapshot on the cult of Mary worship November 8, 2008

This little book is a sweet and light tribute to the cult of the Virgin Mary. As a former Catholic, the quotes, prayers, hymns, poems,information about feast days, were cute and nostalgic. What I found fault in the book is the emphasis on the plastic Mary figurines, the odd little homemade looking shrines in the images used. The photos were just this side of sarcastic and belittling. Catholics idolize Mary. Christians acknowledge the importance of her in fulfilling Scripture in being the virgin who gave birth to the Messiah. There is only one biblical cite for Mary in the whole book. The rest of the text are portions of poems and hymns. There are beautiful works of art, paintings, scultures, icons, churches and monuments that could have given this Madonna in a pocket a more meaningful and spiritual value to this book. The author describes herself as a mind, body spirit consultant. The detached feel of this treatment of the Madonna is probably a result of her being a "former" Catholic too. A devotional book this is NOT.
