Product Description Judas has been having some very unusual dreams. A demonic Incubus named Lemiel that wants to get to know him better is visiting him. He resists for as long as he can, but there's a limit to how much spiritual probing that someone can take.

A gem within the fandom. September 2, 2008 Hayley Alice (Eugene, OR) When I picked up the first two volumes of this series at a con, I have to admit that I was initially skeptical of the outcome. Once upon a time I was active in the yaoi fandom, but in recent years I've noticed that many of the works produced (especially those originating in the US) are uninteresting and highly derivative. It was only in the last few months that I returned to the fandom at all. Also, I usually run from fantasy-type pairings.
But (there is a but) something about the artwork piqued my interest, so I picked up both volumes. I found them to be very refreshing both plot-wise and artwork-wise. The opening of this volume (a story about the best cake in the world) really gathered my interest, such an original and intriguing start, and very psychologically telling of the development of the characters (specifically Judas) through the rest of the book.
In addition the artwork is fabulous. I wish the pages were numbered so it would be easier to reference my favourite panels for this review. I think, however, that my favourite is a scene where Judas is sleeping on the couch, and the panel itself is very dim, with a hand on the back of the couch just over Judas. I thought it added a very nice effect, and took a moment to settle in my mind.
Overall, I would recommend this graphic novel, both to the long-term yaoi fans, and the straying sheep of the fandom like myself.
INCUBUS 1 May 25, 2008 JenB (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
INCUBUS 1 is cute, decently drawn (rather bland but at least the men look like adults), and has a pretty cool story.
Judas is in love with his professor, but the professor doesn't notice. As soon as Judas accepts that his love is unrequited, he starts having explicit sex dreams about a mysterious man, and then realizes the man is actually an incubus named Lenniel. Judas is special, and another incubus wants to steal his soul. Lenniel must protect his young lover from the evil incubus.
This is the first volume in a series, so I'm relatively okay with the cliffhanger non-ending. I get that, and I can forgive it since I knew ahead of time that it was the beginning of a series. What I don't get, however, is the backstory. I felt really lost. Judas and Lenniel have apparently met before, but that's never explained. As far as I know, this book has no prequel. The "bad guy" wants Judas so he can replace his own young lover's soul with Judas' soul. But why? Why does the young lover need a soul? Hopefully these things are explained in Vol. 2.
My big problem with this book is that I paid $10 for it and it only took me 45 minutes to read from cover to cover, including the bizarre bonus story at the end.
This is a cute manga with some pretty explicit love scenes, but I'd recommend buying it used, and be sure to grab Vol. 2 as well so you can jump right into it and don't have to be frustrated about the abrupt ending.
I give INCUBUS 4 stars for quality and originality, but only used or on sale.
short and incomplete May 9, 2008 Furio (Genova - Italy) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
In this first short volume of this serial we have the very beginning of what looks like an interesting story (reading the second volume I had to turn this positive statement down though).
The idea of casting an incubus (a wanton demon who persecutes his/her victims)as an antagonist is interesting but not fully exploited as the demon here is quite a tame one, not to mention in love with the man he harasses.
That the first villain the two have two face (an ifrit? ifrits are supposed to be arab demons, quite a curious melting pot the author is making) is lead by love is an interesting assumption too.
The sheer plot does not make that lot of sense unless one keeps constantly in mind that the main character, Judas, loathes himself so much as to be seriously handicapped even in his everyday life.
What plot is made sense of though is still quite little: the yaoi is extremely short, has a cliffhanger ending and must be read together with the second volume.
Drawings are the main asset: Ms Yayoi's men are handsome, very masculine, attractive, they could never be mistaken for women. The unfortunate habit of classifying gay men in top OR bottom is present but less annoying than it usually is.
Sex scenes are nicely done and nearly explicit.
So, So but it has Men that look like Men April 4, 2008 robbie (MD) I found Incubus 1 second edition so, so. I did enjoy it but not so that I really, really liked it. There several intimate dream sequences with Judas and Lenniel. These were somewhat explicit but not very graphic. There were intimate encounters between two other characters and they were more graphic and a little explicit. Its not a love fest. The whole of the story is long and very wordy. I do think it does flow mostly smooth. Ends in a cliffhanger. The bonus story, Weapons of Mass Destruction, is interesting and has a few intimate encounters. A Love conquers all type story (in my opinion). No real Happy Ever After here though. My recommendation is to get this if your thinking about getting Incubus 2.
From someone not familiar with the work.... March 27, 2008 lore (Neverwhere) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Conversely, I'm not familiar with the mangaka's other work, and I haven't read Incubus 2 yet. That said...I still liked it. I thought the main Incubus story ended a bit quickly for my taste, though. This volume ends on a cliffhanger, and I didn't feel like it had the usual amount of plot most manga volumes do. However, enough happened in it that I am interested enough to buy volume 2.
There's plenty of adult action throughout, as well as physical action. I enjoyed the art in general, but the second story, "Weapons of Mass Destruction", stood out. The panels are full of gorgeous detail, and I was glad, for once, to have a second edition. ^^
My suggestion would be to get both volumes at once so you don't have to wait through the cliffhanger.
