Are you kidding? February 2, 2010 David W. Lee (Noo Yawk) I agree with the other reviewers; where were the fact checkers? "PAUL STANLEY, WHO PLAYS BASS FOR KISS..." yup that's what the author says about Paul Stanley, who apparently wanted to manage/produce GNR prior to Appetite. Are you kidding? WTF? I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that. You cannot get that wrong.
Also, Davis trashes Poison and Ratt; like it or not they were MTV darlings and they sold millions of records, isn't that what it's about? Poison still sells and Ratt is still kicking. He also implies that Metallica was part of the Hollywood scene, which is kinda off.
Davis wrote "Hammer of the Gods" about Zep. I never read it, but this book about GNR is kinda of a rip off of Mick Wall's two GNR books which are way better because he travelled with the band, and his accounts are 100% more accurate. Also Wall wrote for Kerrang, and he was a true fan of metal and all of the bands roaming Hollywood Blvd. in the 80's. Afterwards, Mick Wall wrote his book about Zep, which I think was a blatant "in yer face" to Davis.
No fact checking or originality here! January 26, 2010 T. Robbins Another review has already slammed this book for it's serious lack of fact checking, but I don't understand how the very first error got past anyone that is a GN'R fan. The book states that Axl Rose was born in Lafayette, Indiana on February 12, 1962, when in fact, Axl was born on February 6, 1962. Later, the author says Axl celebrated his 31st birthday on February 6, 1992. In this instance, the birthdate was correct, but the math was wrong; that would have been Axl's 30th birthday. Author Stephen Davis states that Axl's favorite cocktail, Long Island Iced Tea, consists of ice tea with vodka, and yet there is no tea of any kind in that drink, and a heck of a lot more than just vodka. The author states that the band played at the Ritz (nightclub) in New York City, located on 34th Street, when in fact from 1980 to 1989 the Ritz was on East 11th Street, and then moved to the old Studio 54 on West 54th Street. The Hammerstein Ballroom, however, is located on West 34th Street. The only thing new in this book are the factual errors.
It's good because it's an interesting story January 24, 2010 mr simon a presljak (melbourne, AU) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you're looking for an entertaining way to spend a few hours reading, then go for it. It's an engrossing story about a disgustingly dangerous band- but you knew that about GNR anyways.
My problem is believing the author. I don't know about you, but I can't commit to an author who thinks that Paul Stanley played 'bass' in Kiss, or that Faith No More broke up a few years after their '92 tour with GNR.
Great Bio! January 18, 2010 70's Girl (Far From My Hometown) I'm really surprised by all the poor reviews. I have read a lot of biographies and this one was VERY well written. I thought 400 pages would be long and tedious, but every page left me looking forward to reading the next. I thought the author wrote in unbiased manner in regard to each individual member of the band and their entourage. I like Slash's bio, but found this book to be much more "readable".
Band was a train wreck November 22, 2009 Stone Cold Nuts (Virginia) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found the book very readable but the story of this band was just so depressing at times. But the band was the last great rock band before Alternative took the scene, so if you're into rock history it might be considered compulsory reading. It did cause me to revisit their music, but after scratching the surface we see some real lack of depth to the lyrics. Save your money and shop for something more relevant and less mired in the heroin culture of the 80s and 90s.
