Customer Reviews:
This is only a cursory biography of a David Beckham, a great soccer player ... April 19, 2009 D. Fowler (Vermont) David Beckham is a soccer player and a good one. He claims that playing soccer was the only thing he ever wanted to do in his life. He started at the age of three when his father Ted gave him a ball to kick around. He would often go with his father to play on his father's team. When he practiced kicking the ball toward the goal and actually hit the crossbar, he'd get a bit of spending money from his father as an incentive. David was a small boy and many thought it would be doubtful that he would succeed in the sport. On top of that he suffered from OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but with help from his family and coaches, he made it into the big leagues. He played with the Rovers for six years, but when he was fourteen, his dream came true when the Manchester United asked him to join up. As in any sport there can be that one time event that will make a player stand out from the crowd. In David's case it was when he "kicked a goal from the middle of the soccer field." It was the defining point in his career. Later he went on to become a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy team. This book is quite short at only twenty-four pages and not easy to follow. For example, a section called "Overcoming Obstacles" is toward the end of the book after chapters talking about growing up and key events. In the back of the book there is a section on writing a biography, a timeline, words to know, an index and further recommended resources. This is a nice, general overview, but if the reader wants an in depth book he or she would be quite disappointed.
