Amazon.com Review If you don't know the difference between a lob wedge and a lemon wedge, check out Golf for Dummies, by CBS commentator Gary McCord, one of the game's most colorful--and knowledgeable--characters. It's a wonderful, often hilarious, never boring introduction to the game. Don't let the foreword by Kevin Costner or the afterword by Hootie and the Blowfish confuse the issue; this is a terrifically sound, easy-to-follow primer. McCord's potato-chip drill--yes, potato-chip drill--will revolutionize your swing, and your thinking, with overtones that could spill directly into off-the-course existence, as well.
Product Description Basically simple in principle -- hit the ball into the hole by using as few strokes as possible -- golf is one big sand trap of mysterious terminology. If you're a rabbit or a duffer, you need to know your spade-mashie from your mashie-niblick and your brassie from your jigger -- or you just might foozle on the fairway. Of course, golf is also much more. In Golf For Dummies, author Gary McCord, colorful CBS golf commentator, along with John Huggan, former Golf Digest senior writer, share their expertise on technique, courses, rules, etiquette, and equipment. Whether you're new to the game or a pro, you'll enjoy hearing about the history and personalities of this beloved sport.

Golf for Dummies June 24, 2009 Beverly Debenedictis (Boone, NC USA) I purchased this for my husband, who is a beginner golfer. He said it's very helpful, along with a wonderful sense of humor by the author, making it a lot of fun to read. It was recommended by a friend golfer and I'm glad I bought it.
golf for dummies April 2, 2009 Greg Hamilton The book and DVD are very helpful. It can easily be a referance book and it is also a pretty good read. Gary is very entertaining and knowledgeable about the sport. I highly recomend this for any golfer.
Funny stuff February 8, 2009 Henry C. Wolford It's more valuable for the funny stories than it is for the golf tips. For absolute beginners it might have more value. Still, it's a funny book.
Golf for Gary McCord and his Editors April 23, 2008 Peter R. (New Jersey, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
"Golf for Dummies" 3rd Edition is a weak attempt by a Professional (Gary McCord) to help beginners find their way around playing golf. For the most part, I found this book traveling the ranges of advanced play to intermediate play, to history of golf, to various professional courses and to techniques in how Gary made it into professional golf world. That seems good for those who do not want to play golf. But for me, I found the reading quite challenging. Gary missed making a smooth transition between a starting player with just a few used golf clubs to practice and moving onto the first purchage of golf clubs and there forward. The lack of transition seemed to be the main weakness in the book. His editors are to blame for that. As for the content, Gary McCord has lots of good content and substance about golf. I enjoyed a few of the tips he gave about measuring the game. How many shots hit the fairway. How many were safe shots. How many were risky shots. What percentage of the game is the short play and putting. These were very good. Golf is both an intelectual/physical and visual game. So much of what happens at the golf course requires visual clues. Gary's book could also have more visual clues as to the game. More of a hands on approach.
Great book for explaining the fundamentals March 20, 2008 D. Windle 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great book that explains the fundamentals. It has been my experience that most golf problems are due to lack of understanding the fundamentals. I have been golfing for years and found it to be a great review.
