Product Description Red Hot Chili Peppers front man Anthony Kiedis grew up in Hollywood, hustling a living with his actor father. He eventually discovered music and fell in with Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons, and Michael "Flea" Balzary to form the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Fired up by 1970s funk, rock, ska, and soul, the band fought, split, kissed, made up, and then fought again. This collision of singular personalities and musical genius resulted in a run of albums and reputation as a formidable live act. By the end of the 1980s, though, the band was one man down, with lead guitarist Hillel Slovak dying from a drug overdose. The struggle gave rise to 1989's groundbreaking Mother's Milk album. Pre-dating Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers was the first underground band to take what critics dubbed "alternative rock" into the mainstream charts. In 1991, Blood Sugar Sex Magik compounded the Chili Peppers' success, turning its members into bona fide rock stars and plunging them headlong into a riot of drugs, sex, near-death experiences, and spiritual awakening. This book looks at the group through dozens of photographs, and examines the music and stories of one of the most original bands on the planet.

How did they approve the printing of this??? July 13, 2009 O. Neeson (Perth, Australia) I didn't expect this book to be particularly great; it was 15AUD at a discount bookstore.
From the start to the finish, mistakes in the captions; in one picture John is John, and in another he's Hillel. The layout and the whole packaging design is a little tacky, like something a high school student could have done with their hands tied behind their back.
For me the only thing good thing is, it's better than printing out a whole bunch of RHCP pics to use as photo references for my art/drawings of them.
Unless you want to waste your money on this, get 'Me and My Friends- Red Hot Chili Peppers' by band photographer Tony Woolliscroft instead. More up close and personal, with a great photographic history of the band.
Not Happy June 29, 2009 dal 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book arrived bent up and looking used and worn around the edges. It was a gift for my son-in-law and I didn't have time to re-order. It was advertised as "new" but was really "dog eared".
I agree with Adam January 30, 2008 Jelena Ivanov (Belgrade, Serbia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ever since I read this book I was wondering is there a place where I can write exactly the same what Adam wrote. There are so many shameful mistakes! I was very disappointed. I can't believe that someone can publish something like that. I like RHCP music very, very much but I am not that kind of fan who is interested in knowing everything about the group and if there are mistakes which I've noticed at once... that is so, so wrong.
Song Stories Anyone?? June 11, 2007 Nadirah (New York) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
When I first got this book I was so excited to finally learn the meanings behind those amazing RHCP songs. But the book doesn't really say much about the songs that fans don't already know. So if you are looking into buying this book, I'd say you should go for it. The pictures are definitely worth it, even if the words aren't. (And yes whoever edited this book did a terrible job, because they did mis-label some of the pictures.) But other than that, any RHCP fan would enjoy this book.
Not really "giving it away"... January 13, 2007 C. Frey (Oklahoma, USA) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Well when I first bought the book, I expected to find out the reasons WHY the songs were written rather than the "intense bass lines".. The title is very misleading and was not was I was anticipating...
P.S.- I did enjoy the pictures even though some of the captions were wrong
