Product Description Meet Alma, a mother and wife, who's brutally honest and bitter. Disappointment and heartbreak have left the once vital and joyful woman so cynical and self-protecting that she has forgotten how to love anyone, including herself. She has become so accustomed to being resentful of her husband, James, that even when she wants to show him love she doesn't know how. He made some mistakes over the course of their decades-long marriage, but she made some mistakes, too, which alienated not only her husband but friends and neighbors as well. Deep down she is sorry for what happened and still loves Harold, but stubborn pride eats away the short time they have left to make amends. When she finds herself widowed with grown children in far-off places, a deep loneliness sets in and she starts to give up on life. That is until a group of red hat ladieswhom she once thought of as belonging to a cultextend hands of friendship and reintroduce her to herself and, possibly, a new love. In this debut novel, Wayans has crafted unforgettable characters in Alma, her family, and friends, and a charming story that stays with the reader long after the last page is read and reminds us of the enduring power of love and friendship.

Loved this book!!! September 7, 2010 S. J. Lewis (Maryland) Don't underestimate Damon Wayans on his writing abilities. This book was really good!!! As an added plus it was written without sex or curse words. I couldn't put this book down. Can't wait to see what else Damon will come up with.
Red Hats August 16, 2010 C. Smith (Ma, USA) This is a very quick read, but not a very funny book (I was expecting one coming from a comedian). The main character is Alma a 64 year old woman who is both crass and insulting towards those around her. After her husband dies (to whom she is especially rude) Alma unwillingly picks up with a branch of the Red Hat ladies after they save her life. And she sure does shake things up a bit. This book does have sensitive subjects like drug addiction, jealousy, suicide, having sex with strangers, diabetes, and much more. For such a little book it tries to fit in a lot, and this is where it kind of looses me. I feel that it was rushed and it is not written to it's full potential. It's language is very simple and it feels a little rough in places. I think it would have been much better if it had been expanded and let all of these issues develop slowly and at a better pace, because right now it just feels rushed. There is just one problem after another.
Inspiring and good August 9, 2010 L. EVANS This book is a good read on a weekend when you've had a really bad week. It is short and could be read in 2-3 days. The heroine reminds me of my Aunt Marylee, honest, stern, but loving.
Red Hats a Pleasant Surprise August 7, 2010 GrannyX7 Red Hats was a very pleasant surprise. I didn't know what to expect from Mr. Wayans. The story of Alma and her local Red Hats moved along quickly. The characters were cute but believable. I laughed out loud a few times, but then, it is written by Mr. Wayans. I highly recommend this as a little uplifting story, a perfect summer read. It will also make you think twice about holding long grudges against people you really love.... Kudos, Mr. Wayans!!
GOOD, FAST, FUNNY......!!!! August 6, 2010 Dana Y. Bowles (West Chester, PA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When Alma and husband Harold's tumultuous relationship ends with the sudden death of Harold, it leaves Alma full of guilt and regret. So much so that she thinks that there can only be one solution.....to take her own life. But when a group of willful and young-at-heart women wearing red hats intervene, life as Alma has known it changes forever. Immediately she is "saddled" with a group of generous, thoughtful, and supportive friends....something that she is completely unfamiliar with. Initially the efforts of the women are greeted with suspicion by Alma; but eventually she comes to realize that sometimes people are just kind....when there is nothing in it for them at all. And although Alma feels as though she owes the Red Hats her very life, she soon comes to realize that she has brought something equally valuable to their friendships; and when she meets the man of her dreams and is presented with an opportunity to right the wrongs of her past, Alma becomes the woman that everyone but she knew that she was capable of being. A fast, fun read.
