    Product Description
Run For Cover: The Art Of Derek Riggs is a full color explosion of Eddie in your face. Iron Maiden's beloved neon monster is quite possibly the most beloved and recognized character rock 'n' roll has ever witnessed. And in Iron Maiden lore, Eddie has been there from the beginning, helping make Maiden the epic metal juggernaut they have become. In Run For Cover, heavy metal's preeminent book man Martin Popoff coaxes the life story out of Eddie's reclusive creator, with Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood - the prime source of ideas for Eddie outside of Derek himself - also adding his twist on the tale. But Run For Cover doesn't stop there. We also see Derek's work before Maiden, as well as his art for the likes of Gamma Ray and Stratovarius, all the while Derek explaining the often esoteric meanings behind the art, his techniques, as well as the battles with his health that have often threatened to grind his output to a halt. Run For Cover is presented as a 180 page, full color, large format, top quality art book, sporting approximately 200 graphics, some unpublished, some unfinished, many pristine originals from the Iron Maiden vaults, thanks to the full cooperation of Smallwood and his charges. In addition, Riggs has painted a stunning new Eddie to grace the cover.

5 out of 5 stars For the real Iron Maiden enthusiasts   June 26, 2009

I only got this book in post recently, and it looks truly excellent. One of the main reasons I bought this book is, because as well as being an Iron Maiden fan, I've always loved the Eddie illustrations ever since I was about twelve years old when I first seen the artwork for Somewhere in Time. I remember back in the early nineties drawing Eddie's face on all my folders, pencil cases, paper for notes and anything else I could get my hands on, much to my teachers annoyance and dismay. Since then he's always been my all time favourite heavy metal mascot, and I continue to be fascinated with the art, up to the present day.

This book has all the Eddie pictures from the albums, and all of the single covers from 1980 to around 2000. At the moment I'm trying to gather up all high quality scans of most of the Eddie drawings, from my collection Iron Maiden vinyl's to pictures on the net as well, so this publication will be truly great in that regard. It also gives a great description on each piece, and the story behind it. There were just a couple of omissions though, like the Christmas Eddie's from the Somewhere in Time period and some others. It actually does have that Christmas Eddie with the cyberborg reindeer, but unfortunately its quite small, and I would have to seen a bigger picture of it. Thankfully it also has the one with Eddie and 'The Seven Dwarves' which always amused me.

There are also a couple of other bands and artists in here like Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Budgie and Alvin Lee. While these pieces of art are great, they don't take up most of the book, which is a relief, because for me, Eddie is the real star of this book and that is reason enough for anybody to buy it. This book will sell out fast I'm sure, so get it before it goes out of print altogether while you can.
