| Customer Reviews: The key of C is not always easy, but this is a good collection February 11, 2010 Volkert Volkersz (Snohomish, WA United States) Make no mistake, reducing Beatles songs to the key of C (or the relative A minor) does not necessarily make them any easier. Even reducing the chords to the basic major, minor, seventh, diminished and augmented chords doesn't make them much easier either.
Why? Because the Beatles rarely stayed with the basic 3 or 4 chords, and they often had key changes or modulations in the middle of the song that took them to other keys.
What I'm saying is if you're looking for a book that just has C, Am, F and G7, this is not the book you're looking for.
Having said that, this is a great resource for musicians who want to play some of the big hits of the Beatles enough to satisfy an audience, or themselves.
I checked a copy out of the library and used a few tunes with young musicians who wanted to jam on the Beatles and it worked very well. I could also see using this in a night club or coffeehouse setting if you're looking to do a quick cover of a Beatles song.
These tunes are nicely laid out in large font with melody and chords only (and the occasional instrumental line when necessary). As much as possible the songs are presented to avoid page turning, but several are three or four pages long.
If you're looking for songs in the original keys, this is not the book to get (except for the few, like "Something," that were originally done in the key of C).
Overall this is a good selection of tunes by Lennon and McCartney and George Harrison and a couple from other sources, such as "Twist and Shout" and "Act Naturally."
