Amazon.com Review A Note to Amazon Readers (and a Q&A) from Valerie Bertinelli Dear Amazon Customer, Glad to see you here and hopefully purchasing my book. I've heard if you buy multiple copies it's a better experience--a better one for me! But seriously, I'm usually on Amazon, too. I've been buying books through the site for ten years. I enjoy reading the reviews. I get a good sense of the book, and I like to hear what other people have to say. Like in a traditional bookstore, I can look at the cover, peek inside the book, and check out the bestseller lists. Valerie - Do you have a favorite character from a book? I love Scout and Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird.
- If you can be any character from a book, who would you like to be? I would like to be Scarlett and I would let Rhett know how much I love him.
- How do you decide what next book you want to read? If it s for my book group, whoever hosts the next gathering picks the book, so it s picked for me seven out of eight times. But on my own, I read reviews and ask people whose taste I like what they re reading.
- Where s your favorite place to read? Either lying in bed or on the sofa next to the fireplace.
- What is your favorite genre? I don t really have one.
Product Description Valerie Bertinelli, then: bubbly sitcom star and America's Sweetheart turned tabloid headline and rock star wife. Now: actress, single working mother of teenage rock star, and weight-loss inspiration to millions. We all knew and loved Valerie Bertinelli years ago when she played girl-next-door cutie Barbara Cooper in the hit TV show One Day at a Time, and then starred in numerous TV movies. From wholesome primetime in America's living rooms, Valerie moved to late nights with the hardest-partying band of the decadent eighties when she became, at twenty, wife to rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen. Losing It is Valerie's frank account of her life backstage and in the spotlight. Here are the ups and downs of teen stardom, of her complicated marriage to a brilliant, tormented musical genius, and of her very public struggle with her weight. Surprising, uplifting, and empowering, Losing It takes you behind the scenes of Valerie's acting career and marriage, recalling the comforts, friendships, and problems of her television family, her close relationships with her parents and brothers, the stress and worries of being the wife of a rock star, and the joys of motherhood. Like many women, Valerie often remembers the state of her life by the food she ate and the numbers on her scale. So despite her celebrity, Valerie's voice is so down-to-earth, honest, and appealing that you'll feel as if you're talking with a girlfriend over coffee. Funny and candid, Valerie recounts her attempts to maintain a healthy self-image while dealing with social pressures to look and act a certain way, and to overcome career insecurities and relationship problems, all of which will be familiar to the hundreds of thousands of women who struggle every day with these same issues. From marital turmoil to the joys of a new career, from being named among Penthouse's ten sexiest women in the world to overhearing whispers about her weight gain in the grocery store, this is Valerie's inspiring journey as she finds new love, raises a terrific kid, and motivates other women as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig.

One pound at a Time July 3, 2009 lmj (central OH) I loved watching "One Day at a Time" and always thought Valerie Bertinelli was beautiful. I realized she wed Eddie Van Halen, a rocker, at a young age. I had no idea about the rocker and rocky life that she lead. An easy and quick read, but I wish Bertinelli had held back some. She is willing to put it ALL out there - and she did.
Disappointed June 1, 2009 Ruth Funaro-Lopez (Victorville, CA USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Somewhere in the middle I started speed reading in hopes of finding a happy ending. There really isn't one. She's still the same person, only lighter...for now. I'm glad Jenny Craig worked for her, but she needs to repent of her sins and get saved by trusting Jesus Christ as her Savior! Otherwise expect a Losing It Again sequel.
Not exactly what I expected, but a good read May 29, 2009 PT Cruiser (CA USA) Given the title, I was expecting this book to be more about the weight that Valerie lost on the Jenny Craig diet. Actually, only about one chapter told about that and there really weren't too many details. But I did enjoy reading her honest, detailed account of her childhood, growing up period on One Day at a Time, her marriage to Eddie Van Halen and divorce. I didn't realize that she was that involved with drugs when she was married to him, but I guess it would have been pretty hard not to be, given the lifestyle they lived. It was interesting to hear that people thought she was fat when she was on the TV show and how much actresses are judged on their body image. I always thought she looked just about perfect in the show. It's easy to see how she ended up gaining weight with all the pressure of a show business career and then with the wild lifestyle during her marriage. Reading that the rich and famous have many of the same issues with weight and self image that the rest of us do is kind of surprising sometimes but why should they be any different? It was an interesting book, and a quick read. I'd recommend it to anyone who followed Valerie's career and watched the show growing up.
Valerie, We Hardly Knew Ya! May 10, 2009 Ms. 90 (Maryland) This book clearly shatters every vision I had of Ms. Bertinelli. She was such the good girl on tv's One Day At A Time and other shows/movies, but in this book, whew, she clearly ain't a saint. Aside from the stuff about her ex-husband and her struggle with her weight, she came off as some kind of sex-kitten who tooted up every now and again. Gasp! Not Barbara Cooper! Oh, well, she's human. 3.5 stars.
Very disappointed May 4, 2009 Kelly A. Chase (CA, USA) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I am so glad that I bought this used. The book starts off with a very interesting history and insight of her early life. Also her early marriage. I was very taken back when it shifted directions and she goes off on republicans and her fights with her conservative father. She writes that she could never forgive her Dad for his following of Bush, Rove, and several other rupublican leaders. I was very offended. I purchased the book for her story about weight lose, not her opinion on politics. I found it rude and instantly put it down and listed it online and resold it. Atleast I got some of the money back.
