In this compelling memoir, Brooke Shields talks candidly about her experience with postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter, and provides millions of women with an inspiring example of recovery hen Brooke Shields welcomed her newborn daughter, Rowan Francis, into the world, something unexpected followed-a crippling depression. 2 out of 5 stars Truly unbelievable   April 20, 2009

It should come as no surprise that she is suffering from depression. The root of MOST depressive states is a self-possessed mentality. This is a classic example. Being about ones self is DEPRESSING, and this story only details the story of WHY.

Truly sickening, at a time when her baby needed her absolute love, attention, and devotion, Brooke was, as she has ALWAYS been, all about her poor little self. This is a perfect example of why most people should not have children: they lack the emotional maturity to actually CARE for someone.

Do the kid a favor, find an adoptive parent that is up to the task of parenting.

5 out of 5 stars read it while i had ppd   March 29, 2009

and it was not a good idea at the time. i was 3 months into it , i had anxiety attacks too , i moved in with my parents and i started to read up on anything i could get my hands on that had to do with ppd. Brooke shield's words echoed my feelings , the only difference was that i did not have suicidal thoughts and i did not want to harm my baby, after getting through half of the book i cried so much that my mum took the book from me and refused to give it back.
thankfully i started feeling better a few months afterwards and i finished the book. i'm so happy that she wrote it. many people don't understand what ppd is all about and i think this is a great reference for family and friends of a women who are going through it.
i wish she would write another book to describe her experience second time around.
i feel so sad for the women who lost their lives from this horrible illness.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!   March 13, 2009
Jason Pfister (Santa Cruz, CA USA)
I am a man so I will not experience PPD but I have experienced depression before (I was diagnosed with it in November/2001). Brooke's book really hit home as to the reality of how awful PPD really is and that you feel it will not end. However, she encourages you to seek help if you have similar symptoms to what she underwent. I found myself relating to this book since a lot of what Brooke felt was the same way I felt when I first battled depression: I felt worthless, lost enjoyment in activities, had little energy, thought that I could overcome it on my own and within a day or two, and thought that it would never get better. I finally admitted that I had a problem and sought help. Like Brooke, I was first put on Paxil and, within a couple of weeks, I was my old, cheery, self again and started the healing process!

Brooke's book shows how much of a survivor she is and offers the proper resources for women experiencing post partum depression. This is not something that is going to go away...it is a very common medical condition for thousands of women. I applaud her raising awareness to this vital issue, detailing the symptoms of PPD, and only hope that more people read this book to get a sense as to how ugly and terrible the disease is. If she can help just one person with this book (which I am sure she did), then it is worthy of a read.

I did not care that much for Shields before I read this book. Now that I finished it and saw her discuss the reality of PPD in other venues, I can only admire and thank her for reaching out to make a difference. Thanks so much, Brooke, for your compassion and willingness to affect so many peoples' lives for the better! I consider you a terrific role model and a wonderful mother for recognizing you had a problem and got help for it before it became too late.

Oh, and Tom Cruise...do not get me started on him. It speaks volumes that Brooke got a degree from an Ivy League school and he dropped out of high school. He clearly showed his "intellect" with his crass comments towards her. I will no longer see a movie of his due to his disrespect towards a survivor who wants to touch peoples' lives in a positive light. I also felt he only apologized to her to try and get back into peoples' good graces. As one who survived depression myself, he will never be in my list of people I admire (more like he is in the Top Ten of celebrities I never want to hear from again!). Brooke, however, has a spot firmly entrenched in that admiration list of mine...and it is near the top.

5 out of 5 stars WELL DONE BROOKE SHEILDS!   March 2, 2009

What a wonderful book. It was good to know that I was not the only person to go through PPD the way I did.

    5 out of 5 stars An amazing and compelling story...well written...and a must read!   December 27, 2008
    N. Wimmert (Ann Arbor, MI)
My Mother purchased this book for me after I had my baby and started suffering from post partum blues. I am not a huge fan of reading but thought I would give it a try. I found that I could NOT put this book down. From the very beginning Brook captures you with her story and you feel as if you are living it through her and with her. She goes through her journey of a miscarriage, fertility treatments, pregnancy, having her baby , post partum and the impact it had on her and her family. She gives intimate details and helps you understand that you are not alone.
This book is a must read. I seriously could not put the book down. I had to read it from start to finish in one setting.
One thing I thoroughly enjoyed about the book is the amount of research she did and the various resources she used to help readers understand the seriousness of PPD. She offers thoughtful insight that others are afraid to talk about. It is a serious issue that seems to be swept under the rug. This book will help you feel you can identify with someone and that you do not need to be ashamed of what you are going through.
If you know someone suffering from Post Partum Depression or just have an interest in the subject this is definitely a book you want to pick up. The story will stick with you months after you read it.
