Corner Boy Tale... July 21, 2009 Urban-Reviews.com (Urban-Reviews.com) Raymir is that `nicca' on the streets of Southbridge. His crew consists of lifelong friends Scrap, Bean Pie, Swagger, and Boogie Down. They have their hands in a little bit of this and that, which includes bank robbery, drug dealing, and jacking other dealers. If it's about that paper, then they're all up in it! Raymir is the mastermind, and he's always navigating lucrative moves for the entire crew, even those that are incarcerated.
Southside Hustlers reads more like a corner boy in the commons area of prison narrating his past. The character development was weak with no visible plot. This was the usual hood story glamorizing the money, murder, sex, and women. Southside Hustlers lacked originality and could have used a lot more excitement.

Typical May 7, 2009 L. Romich (Akron, oH) Southside Hustler by Rich McLaughlin is the story of Raymir and his crew: Scrap, Pie, Swagger and Boogie Down. They have everything the typical street hustler has, the money, the cars and the women. They have a few hustles going on, including selling drugs and robbing banks.
Raymir's best friend, Knowledge, who went to jail protecting him under the code of the streets, steps back into the game after doing a seven-year bid. After a close friend of Knowledge's is killed it causes Knowledge to wage a war on the streets of Wilmington and that brings the heat to the city.
Although a fast read, mainly due to the fact that the book was double spaced and only 180 pages - I read this in a couple hours, I felt that South Side Hustler lacked originality. This book is typical of many plots that many street-lit authors have written. Unfortunately, there is nothing about this book that stands out from the rest. You may think that I am being harsh but I am tired of the "typical" street-lit books. I believe that some of these new authors need to come hard or go home. We, as readers need originality. I believe that the author had plenty of room to develop more of a plot and characterization. That being said, I believe this book deserved 2 stars.

A Must Read! Inspirational to Youth April 21, 2009 Kishon C. Williams First off I like to express my humble gratification to the Author of the book South Side Hustler, by Richard McLaughlin. I read the book and enjoyed it to the fullest. What's unique about this text oppose to other urban texts, is the Author himself has used life tools, inner mixed with fiction to help related to everyday challenges that goes on through out our society. I especially like that Richard himself is a true example of how life affected him growing up to where he is now. This book is worth the read, it's inspirational to our youth. It lets the society to know that no one is perfect and you're not always dealt the right hand in life one desires, but the reality of it most is how you can make an unfortunate situation turn into a positive experience that the end result is successful. Congratulations again to Richard McLaughlin for making a difference and not letting unfortunate circumstances stop him from achieving his dreams in life.
The only life some know... April 20, 2009 Readers With Attitude Bookclub (Richmond, VA) Everyone knows that the life of a hustler is not at all an easy road. Not only do they have to have eyes in the back of their head to keep the predators of the street at bay, but they have the long hand of the law in their back pocket as well. There is only one thing that could make someone want to live through this constant scrutiny, and that is the money. The saying goes, money makes the world go round, what happens when a hustler from the Southside of Wilmington Delaware gets knee deep in the dirties game there is to play. In a game like this, someone is bound to get hurt, sooner than later.
I enjoyed the depth that the author went into with the book. It was well explained and even shares some secrets and tricks to the game. There were sometimes however that I felt that the immense detail made the book a little `extra' however it well entertained.
I almost wish that the last three chapters had been presented sooner. This was the point where I was most involved in the storyline. However, just as I was getting wrapped up in the plot in those chapters everything came to an abrupt end with plans of a sequel. This was a settle let down. I would have loved for the story to be resolved and then the characters revisited in future novels from the author.
One thing that I thought was so unique was the cover. You can almost always see a city skyline background with scantily clad women adorning the front. On the cover of Southside Hustler the author pays homage to those who lost their lives to the game. I respected this a great deal and applaud the author for stepping out of the box with this tribute.

Kudos to a new author April 16, 2009 Tika (DC) This book was well written for a new author. The story flowed very well. The author left out all of the fluff and stuck to the main story. The characters are people I can identify with. Urban fiction books usually stick to the same scenarios. This author had some new and very unique ideas and a he put a different spin on some of the same general scenarios urban fiction writers sometimes use. This book was a good read. I can't wait for part 2. Kudos to the author.
