    Book Description

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Rolling Stone stoked the imagination of America's social revolutionaries and fueled the careers of brilliant writers like Tom Wolfe, Hunter S. Thompson, Joe Klein, Cameron Crowe, P.J. O'Rourke and visionary photographers including Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger and Baron Wolman.

Rolling Stone Cover to Cover is a backstage pass to four decades of popular culture--a DVD ROM-based, searchable digital archive of every issue of Rolling Stone magazine from 1967 to 2007. Browse issues 1 through 1026 over 98,000 searchable pages, exactly as they first appeared in print--every story, review, interview and even every ad.

This exclusive box set also comes with a photo-filled, 208 page page companion coffee table book providing a vivid behind-the-scenes look at the magazines history, from birth to today and includes a bonus one-year subscription to Rolling Stone (a $12.95 value). See certificate inside package for offer and rebate details.

The product includes the Bondi Reader, powerful MAC or PC browsing software that allows you to explore, search and view every page, and to arrange and save multiple reading lists. The ultimate pop culture reference tool, this essential collection is a must-have for all music fans, political junkies, nostalgia buffs and collectors.

    5 out of 5 stars Such a Great Set   June 6, 2009
    E. Burkholder (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)
I passed on this when it first came out because I was skeptical of how well the software would perform, and I didn't want to pay $100 to find out the hard way. Now that the price has come down, I made the purchase. The verdict: Excellent set, and the software works well (and quickly).

I have yet to scratch the surface of what's here, and I've already been thoroughly entertained.

The sheer amount of content makes it worth the price several times over. Especially if you're a pop culture junkie (like me), or have an interest in the history of popular music, American culture, politics, TV, film, or technology (check out early articles explaining how to buy the right VCR and explaining this curious new gadget called a compact disc player). The photographs are sometimes brutally candid, sometimes breathtakingly staged, but always worth a glance.

You've got early writings from the likes of Lester Bangs, Hunter Thompson, Cameron Crowe and PJ O'Rourke. You'll bump into things you never would have known to look for, such as future MTV personality Kurt Loder's gushing review of Prince's "Purple Rain" album or the 1983 feature story ripping the new cable channel MTV for selling out rock and roll, and for having the nerve to turn music into something you can watch.

There are charts of the best-selling albums and hottest singles at that time. Countless reviews of new albums, movies and TV shows. Extensive coverage of major events like Woodstock, Live Aid, and the murder of John Lennon. Obituaries of the biggest pop culture icons from 1967-2007, ranging from Johnny Cash to Kurt Cobain to Jim Morrison to Keith Moon to John Belushi to Chris Farley.

Biting political commentary and election coverage. Glimpses of musicians and actors that were on top of the world for the briefest of stays, and have not been heard from since.

Classified ads that are often worth the price of admission by themselves, for sheer laugh-out-loud comedic value. There's an assortment of vintage advertisements: A new model of Vans sneakers marketed specifically for breakdancers in the mid-80s, or the Renault automobile, or a new movie called Ghostbusters. I could go on forever about the great content in this set... and I already have, so I'll stop here.

The collector's book that comes with this set is very nice too, but the Rolling Stone collection on three DVDs is so robust and fun to look through that it renders the book an afterthought. The Bondi reader software works fine on my three year old Dell. I never have to wait more than a few seconds for my selected content to load up, which is normal with most applications.

I returned one of the sets. We thought it was a set of the 1st 40 years of the RollingStones music group.

4 out of 5 stars Great content. Mediocre software.   December 18, 2008

Have every issue of Rolling Stone magazine for 40 years available to me in such a compact package is absolutely great. The interviews. The music reviews. Classic Hunter Thompson. Classic P.J. O'Rourke. Even a bit of Matt Taibbi. The coffee table book is very nice, as well. All together in a nice sturdy box.

The only issue that I have is with the Bondi software. It takes a while to fire up in Windows XP. Also, if the DVD is already in my drive when the Bondi program is started, it won't recognize it. I have to eject the disc and re-insert it. There are other aspects to the software that irk me, but they are minor quibbles.

For anyone who likes reading old Rolling Stone mags and has a decent computer, this is a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Well Done   October 20, 2008

I think the discount was worth the wait, I'm glad I waited rather than following my impulse to buy it off the shelf at my local book store. I will in the future check the amazon website before making a similar purchase. The wait was only a few days vs. instant gratification.
The 40 dollars savings was great and the book plus 4 disks are a outstanding value. Art

2 out of 5 stars Bondi reader not wroking   October 13, 2008

Okay! So I go ahead and purchase the Rolling Stone Cover to Cover DVD set. Put the Bondi install disc in my DVD drive and it won't install. I should have listened to all those who complained about this reader. I've contacted the company for a replacement which should not have been necessary. WHoever said these should be .pdf files is correct.
