4 out of 5 stars Absolutely fascinating   January 31, 2010
    Vincent F. Safuto
I didn't buy it from Amazon. A couple of weeks ago, I saw it at Barnes & Noble in Sarasota, and was stunned. Not at the fact that it existed -- I knew that -- but that it was selling for $24.95, and there were six or seven in the "Bargain" section. I have The Complete New Yorker, and thoroughly enjoy it despite its glitches (Up to summer of 1947 there) but I didn't buy the Rolling Stone set when I saw it.

I thought about it for two weeks, and finally yesterday I went and bought it. It installed well, and there it was: the issue right after John Lennon was killed, with that famous photo. Oddly, I have that paper issue, which someone gave to me in 1980, buried in a closet somewhere. The only other issue I have is a recent anniversary issue.

I had a blast just in the couple of hours I spent exploring the first DVD, looking at the ads and reading the stories. It brought back tons of memories. I look forward to more exploration in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Rolling Stone - Cover to Cover (Bondi)   December 31, 2009
    BlogOnBooks (Los Angeles CA)
When Jann Wenner and Ralph Gleason founded Rolling Stone magazine in a small San Francisco office space in November 1967, computers were the size of a full room and counter culture was the order of the day. Back then, the only way to get the full contents of the magazine in compendium form was to purchase the annual bound books of multiple issues for a lofty price. But alas, technology has changed and now the folks at Bondi Digital Publishing have introduced the Bondi Reader, a groundbreaking, user-friendly browser that allows them to publish a DVD-ROM collection of every word, article, picture and issue from the 40 years of this venerable rock magazine. Suffice to say that everyone knows the impact that Wenner has had both chronicling the worlds of rock'n'roll, film, politics, et al, while also giving a platform to many of the leading voices of a generation - Hunter Thompson, Tom Wolfe, Lester Bangs, William Grieder and others as well as photographers ranging from Baron Wolman to Annie Leibowitz to Herb Ritts (lest we not forget the incredible illustrator Ralph Steadman!). What is different this time is that this Bondi edition, complete with coffee table book and a free subscription, has revolutionized the way publishing catalogs it's finest work. By choosing Rolling Stone (and it's just released Playboy: the 50's), Bondi has found perhaps the best subject to ably demonstrate it's digital publishing prowess, making this an essential holiday purchase and undoubtedly a harbinger of great things to come. Well done! - Tim Devine

Item as described, shipped promptly, great price, too. Can't wait to download, but it is a gift for my 14-year-old nephew so I'll have to wait until after his birthday!

5 out of 5 stars All the Rolling Stone you ever wanted to have... but were too young to be able to get it.   July 6, 2009

To be honest I didn't know that this set even existed until last month. I've been a huge Bob Dylan collector for more than 5 years now and since I've finished completing his discography both on CDs and vinyls and I'm also almost done with all the available bootleg shows, I thought to myself: why not start on magazines? There were a lot of fanzines, like The Telegraph, ISIS, etc... and there's this Rolling Stone, which is a legendary magazine itself. I wanted to try to dig out all those RS that had Dylan on cover - or inside. Knew it's going to be 1) almost impossible to do, 2) probably I can't afford it even if I find all those ooooold issues. BUT why not give it a try. I bought a few RS on British E-bay and was looking for more here on Amazon. Didn't find too many, but I came across this set. Checked what this is about and was like WOOWW! A 200+ beautifully published book and 3 dvds consisting of each and every Rolling Stone page from its beginnings to the 40th anniversary. And all that for less than[...]! Plus a free subscription coupon!! (I live outside the US so I can't use it, but I sent it as a gift to a friend in Texas). So here I was, ordering this set to Poland for just 65 bucks including shipping. It arrived in a nice bag about 10 days later. Installed it on my computer and started strolling through those historical pages. Someone did a really great job! And it must have been hard work at the same time, imagine scanning every single page out of around 1000 issues. Ok, maybe not that bad as we already live in a digital era, but surely the earlier issues have been scanned page by page, as there surely hasn't been any digital vault for them. It even looks vintage - first issues are a little yellowish, those scans I mean. Of course it would take a lifetime to go through all of them, but it's not the point. Rolling Stone has a kind of a special place in the US history and culture, so it's really great to have a chance to have it all on your shelve. Especially if you're 26 like me and just physically didn't have a chance to be ordering them when they were being released back in the Sixties. The set has got an easy to follow menu, so actually you can search any article / artist / topic you need in just a matter of seconds. It comes in a very good-looking box and is a really great addition to your book shelve. I'd really recommend it to anybody who's into the American music and culture... especially for that amount of money!! Hey, doesn't it mean that after all, a treasure can cost a bargain?!?!

Hey, Columbia and your deluxe 3 CD Tell Tale Signs for [...] - why don't you take a good example here, huh????
