A true labor-of-love if there ever was one.
Never-before-seen photos and set-lists of the early days of Guns N' Roses, as well as interviews with the people who were there.
This is simply THE primary source for Guns N' Roses history.
Marc Canter, the author, is a close friend of both Slash and Axl Rose and gives the most unbiased, first-hand account of the early days of GN'R ever published.
Reckless Road is also crucial source material for any one interested in the history of Hollywood's notorious Sunset Strip in the 1980s.
Five stars.

This book is all about the photography. The hundreds of shots here are priceless -- especially if you're interested in the underground glam roots of the band. There's a lot more teased hair and makeup in this book than fans of the band a few years later would recognize, but those of us who love that early, in-your-face, down-and-dirty Hollywood scene will just eat this up! Lots of great anecdotes and stories from the band and those who knew them (the groupie bits are great!). Definitely worth your $25 (or whatever it costs ya)!!

It's of course very rare to have so much documentation of a then-unsigned band, especially in the early 80s. The authors do a nice job of putting things together, though I'd personally like a little more narrative as it would have helped me get the bigger picture.
Nearly every page has some type of spelling or punctuation error. Seriously. A person's name will be spelled one way, and the next sentence will spell it a different way. A spellcheck would have solved many of these problems. I found it to be very distracting and made the book amateurish.
If you buy it, be sure to register for the online version so you can see and hear many of the scenes from the book. Very nice addition.

The book itself is very cool, written by a close friend of the band who was a photography buff and chronicled the band's rise in 1985-86. Lots of good pics I had never seen before (and many you will recognize from the liner notes to Appetite.) But the reason this book is so essential is because it is an "enhanced book." ([...]) I had never heard of enhanced books, but the book comes with a unique code you can use to access a bunch of content on their website. Every page of the book has extra content - photos that weren't included in the book, audio clips from early shows, video clips. It is awesome. I wish there were a book like this for every band I love. If you like GnR, I strongly recommend this book and the online extras.
