    5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!   September 15, 2009

I bought this book because I need to have a surgery and I'm a patient where the author is a surgeon. I happen to find it when I was searching for information on him and I thought, being a nursing student, it looked interesting and why not get to know as much about a man that may be operating on you.

I could not put this book down! I loved it! I laughed and cried and was left wanting to read a sequel! The characters were alive with emotion and description making you feel you knew each of them intimately. I loved the way he was able to capture the behind the scenes of a hospital environment from EVERYONE'S view; the doctors, the nurses, the patients and even loved ones... even his barber!

Wonderfully written, fast moving and i would recommend to anyone that can find a copy to read it. It's a beautifully written and entertaining book, even if you don't ever end up needing surgery from the author! :)

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, spellbinding and insightful   August 17, 2007

Bought the book because my son is entering medical school. So very interesting a book; once started I could not put the book down. It reveals the human angle of those larger than life persons wearing the shiny white coats. You get an insight into the ordinary life experiences of people on whom we trust our lives. But, above all the book is interesting, a delightful read.

5 out of 5 stars Just fantastic!   May 30, 1999
A very entertaining novel with lots of great dialogue. The book is written like a movie. I couldn't put it down and it made me laugh the whole time. Thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Real Doctors and Real Stories!   February 13, 1999

As a patient, I have always wondered about one aspect of medicine we never get to see: doctors and nurses behind closed doors with their thoughts and feelings and all the other things they never share with us as patients. "Beyond The Magic Scalpel" is the story of three doctors, three surgeons eager to save the world and the sick people they encounter. It is a tale about modern medicine, love, and glory. The doctor-author shares with us an aspect of medicine I wished every doctor did. I read this book in two days and couldn't put it down.
