    Product Description
Using the cities and culture of the Middle East as a backdrop, this study explores issues within the Arab world and in its relations with the West. Serious debate is interspersed with witty travel dialogue to discuss many issues facing the Eastern world today, such as the adoption of Western popular culture, the war on terror, the Arab-Israeli conflict, martyrdom, the position of women in Islam, and the Western view of the Muslim world.

5 out of 5 stars A good starter for studies in Islamic culture, gepolitics, and postcolonialism   November 26, 2008
    J. Santos (Middle East)
This book is by no means an exhaustive study and critique of dominant trends in the areas mentioned above. All the author does is kind of touch on each one of them: summarizing each theory and giving a brief list of pros and cons. But for those just curious in the main issues that drive the Middle Eastern realities, the book is absolutely recommended. Some of his critiques, such as his explanation of his opposition to the Satanic Verses or his explanantion of the nuances of Arab/Muslim opposition to the existence of Israel are top notch. He makes these observations in a background of a travelogue, so it makes his academic theories all the more interesting and exciting. Highly recommended for novices like me who have no clue and want to start in the shallow end.

This was a great start on a comparative study of the West vs. the East. The fact that both worlds are interlinked in some way. I liked how the author walked the readers through his journey and painted such a detailed picture. Look forward to more journeys in the future.
