According to Dr. James C. Perkins, the majority of African American boys do not realize their full potential because of two issues:
1) they live in an environment which is not conducive to learning during their early formative years and
2) they enter the sixth grade at a time when peer pressure dominates and corrodes the learning structure and promotes bad conduct. Based on the statistics these two issues can produce, Dr. Perkins has created the PLAYBOOK FOR CHRISTIAN MANHOOD: 12 Key Plays for Black Teen Boys. Within the 100 pages of this book, Dr. Perkins takes on the role of a life coach for African American males, between the ages 11 and 15, giving them a roadmap to follow into manhood.
Dr. Perkins relates to the young men in a language universal to most of them--football. He presents twelve strategies for young men to follow, which will lead them to a productive and spirit-filled life. The entire book has the feel and development of a playbook of football strategies. However, the game being played is the game of life. Each strategy, or play, comes from his years as a pastor and founder of the Benjamin E. Mays Male Academy and is supported by scripture. They cover the formation, the many obstacles, various routes by others to the same purpose and the ultimate goal line for each play to name a few.
The PLAYBOOK FOR CHRISTIAN MANHOOD provides a unique perspective and approach to achieving manhood for young Black boys using sound guidance. Dr. Perkins' advice is practical, easy to follow and provides room for note taking and observations. The writing is clear and concise, there is no room for misunderstanding and implementation can begin almost immediately in some cases. Although this book is recommended for use in youth organizations and churches, I can see where it can be used as a tool to help strengthen the father-son relationship or provide guidance for single mothers raising male children.
