Product Description There seems to be no one more qualified or equipped to ponder or even, dare I say, dictate 'quality, taste, and style' than Tim." -Sarah Jessica Parker, actor/producer
Television has introduced the world to a new fashion authority: Tim Gunn. As Bravo's style mentor and Chair of the Fashion Design Department at Parsons The New School for Design, Tim delivers advice in a frank, witty, and authoritative manner that delights audiences.
Now readers can benefit from Tim's considerable fashion wisdom in Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste & Style. He discusses every aspect of creating and maintaining your personal style: how to dress for various occasions, how to shop (from designer to chain to vintage stores), how to pick a fashion mentor, how to improve your posture, find the perfect fit, and more. He'll challenge every reader-whether a seasoned fashionista or a style neophyte-to "make it work!"

Good on basics, not enough visuals hurts this book July 4, 2009 seattleattic (Seattle, WA, USA) I have never seen Tim Gunn's series on Bravo and don't know much about him. I bought this book as I have decided to get serious with my fashion choices. Mr. Gunn obviously has an impeccable background in fashion what with being from the Parsons School of Design, having great taste in fashion and now his TV series and the books. However, as visual person, I was disappointed in the lack of photos which help convey exactly who Cat Powers is/was and how she dressed that makes her an icon. There are illustrations, but they serve more to decorate the book and fill in the white space between sections. The language of the book is OK, meaning it doesn't talk down to the reader. However, it's a bit on the dull side. I prefer the language in Stacy London and Clinton Kelly's book, "What Not to Wear" because it's user-friendly with short sentences and to-the-point tips. The authors spend too much time on the psychology behind our poor fashion choices and inability to throw away expensive garments. This would be better served in a book about organization, rather than quality, taste and style, as the title suggests. Finally, I don't believe it helpful to break down fashion icons into sections, for example Sophia Coppola and Natalie Portman as gamine, or the Sirens: Angelina Jolie, Nigella Lawson and Julie Christie. I don't want to look like someone else. I want to look like me, and work with what I have (or don't have). This book is helpful in making suggestions about what you should own, where to buy it and keeping tabs on trendy clothes (read: don't spend a ton of money on trendy clothes). If you must read this book, I would recommend getting it from the library or borrowing from a friend, unless you are a HUGE fan of Tim Gunn.
Great Book June 13, 2009 Loves to Read (USA) I found this book to be a humorously informative book on dressing with "Quality, Taste & Style." Develop your own sense of style, but do it with class. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to add great basics to her wardrobe, ones that will last for years. He gives good advice on cleaning out your closet, keeping only the things that you'll need, and streamlining your beauty routine. He warns about taking on another woman's look, but encourages taking a part of a look and making it yours.
Enjoyed this book very much March 10, 2009 N. McCurdy (Knoxville, TN USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this book very enjoyable and informative. It is one of the rare books I read cover to cover, partly due to Tim Gunn's excellent sense of humor. The most valuable piece of info I gathered from it carried me through the fall and winter - the purchasing of a good grey cardigan to wear with black pants/jeans. Christmas shopping 2008 was spent in that particular outfit, and I always felt perfectly dressed for stopping to eat on the way home, or ducking into the movies. The book made my life simpler by showing me how to cut my wardrobe down to basic essentials, and assisted with footwear that went with the occasion and the outfit. One other blessing I gleaned from its pages was on good posture and Tim's trick to easily get those shoulders back, never knew it could be so simple. Good book and again humorous.
Fun Read February 13, 2009 WES (MA) While reading this book it was like I heard Tim reading it to me himself. I did gain a few ideas about updating my wardrobe from him, but what I really liked about the book was the context it gave me. It really was able to help understand some fashion terms (there is a glossary but he also explains things in the book) and now I truly know what "gamine" means and looks like. I found the quotes fun, and the the hints and tips at the start and end of the chapter really did help me. Best of all I loved the included movie list. I will keep this one on my shelf and not send it to the used book store.
Tim Gunn's Guide to Style February 12, 2009 J. Blewitt (Canberra, Australia) This was a very entertaining and articulate read. I could imagine Tim speaking over my shoulder as I read. It was certainly not a paint-by-numbers approach to what you should wear. True to his TV show of the same name, he gives you all the information you need to go out and select the clothing and accessories appropriate for you but ultimately you have to do the hard work. It is an excellent guide - but nevertheless a guide only. It is worth reading just for the wonderful use of language.
