If you Love her, buy this!! November 7, 2009 D. S. Williams This is NOT the Marilyn that Hollywood wanted you to "know". But it IS the woman that we all wish we had known!! More than any other "work", this book takes you straight to HER!! Read, re-read, and enjoy!! A true American tragedy!!!
My Favorite Marilyn Book! October 12, 2009 sunshine lady I have been a huge Marilyn fan for many years, this is one of the best books I have on her. The most wonderful thing is that most of the book is from Marilyn's own words from interviews by George Barris . George Barris was a photograper friend who in the summer of 1962 was working with Marilyn just before her death on a book about her life, the pictures he made were to capture the real Marilyn, the girl behind the image. They are not posed studio shots, but of a casual Marilyn in everyday clothes, pants , top, heels and sipping champagne lounging around the house. The pictures of Marilyn playing on the beach, with her hair messy and blowing in the wind are really beautiful. George bought the clothes that Marilyn wore including the swimsuit for the beach photos. Marilyn would later say those were her favorites and "they captured the real me, freckles and all".There is a earthy raw innocence rarely seen in most of Marilyn studio pictures. This is an amazing story and with George's own memories behind each photo. Marilyn seems happy and healthy and said she was looking forward to the future.I think alot of things about Marilyn have been blown out of preportion, she did take too many pills and drank too much champagne but was no drug addict. At 36 Marilyn looks younger than her age, she lost weight and her body is in great shape, the pictures do say alot. George cared for Marilyn and she trusted and opened up to him. George believes Marilyn did not die of suicide. There are many great books about Marilyn I have about 25 books in my collection, but this is the book I love to get out and look at and read over and over. Some color film footage from this shoot on the beach appeared in the "Something's Got to Give" dvd special, if you notice there is a few seconds of Marilyn holding up a green towel, I wonder if there is more film footage of this? That would be awesome to see! Thanks George for sharing this lovely heartfelt book of your friend!I also Love "Milton's Marilyn" and "My sister Marilyn" and "Goddess".

Marilyn - Need I Say More? October 8, 2009 Natasha Underhill (Ireland) As an avid Marilyn Monroe fan I was pleasantly surprised by this little gem. The images that are contained in this book are absolutely fantastic and show Marilyn as Marilyn not as the MMMM Girl that we are all accustomed to. Marilyn was and still remains the most beautiful woman in the world and this book just highlights that fact even more. Stripped of the glamour and elegance of a Hollywood movie set, Marilyn glows sans make-up. Her natural beauty may, in face, be even more captivating than her glamourous persona. Much of the background story provided by the author may at times sound as if he has been talking about his fantasy but underneath it all he seems to try to respect Marilyn. That is more than I can say for some of the other books that have been published which all aim to portray her as nothing more than a drug-addled wannabe actress. Reading her own words makes one realise that Marilyn was an extremely intelligent woman who was never really understood in life. All in all this book is definitely worth a look if only for the glorious images of Ms. Monroe.
Facinating look at the Legends last days & photos March 4, 2008 F. Harris 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This was one of the first Marilyn books I owned and I have to say it still stands out as one of my very favorites because it is so intimate, and the pictures show a very down to earth Marilyn that you feel like you could reach out and touch. George Barris was actually a long time photographer of Monroe, he had the pleasure of catching some of her most iconic moments on camera such as the famous shirt blowing scene from THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH and many more. These are by far his best of her though and I personally favor pics from Marilyn's later years (60's). I love the stories that Barris tells and I am getting ready to reread this book as it has been a few years, I think it is the type of book one can read over and over anyhow. As I have said all the pics are amazing especially the ones of Marilyn on the beach. These however are not the very last pics taken of Marilyn, just the last photo session. The very last shots of her can be found in the book "Mr. S.: The Last Word on Frank Sinatra" when she was on a yacht with Sinatra and at the Cal-Neva Lodge & Casino shortly before her death. Over all though this book is HIGHLY recommended and is essential for any Marilyn fan!
SURPRISE, SURPRISE May 10, 2007 Lynn Marie (Bangor, Pa United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was surprised at this book in Marilyn's own words. This interview was only a few weeks before her death. The pictures were amazing and beautiful. She did not seem at all depressed and was looking forward to the future. Makes you wonder if she was murdered. Surely seems that way after I read the book and looked at those pictures. It almost seems to say "see I want to live" and little did she know that her life was in danger! Poor Marilyn. I hope wherever she is, she knows that some people believe that she did not kill herself. And I hope she is at peace.
