3 out of 5 stars A very good starter book with caveats   July 10, 2005

I can't agree entirely with other reviews here. Most of the songs I tried are in the correct key, though clearly some do vary. I don't mind however, because this is quite typical of any songbook. I've often tried to play along with my favorite songs to find the recording is a quarter- or half-step out of tune! Tape machines-- who needs 'em? Besides, often you need to change the key anyway to be able to sing the song...

I did find some of the chords are not quite correct either- the book will say Dm where it's actually a Dm6, things like that. This is also no big deal. Have you ever compared the "Real Book" to the real recordings? For the most part this book is a great way to get to know all the Beatles tunes and it's very portable.

I do have two main gripes though. First, the songs are almost but not quite in alphabetical order for some unknown reason. "Happiness is a Warm Gun," for example, is between "Every Little Thing" and "From me to You." "Golden Slumbers" is between "Fool on the Hill" and "For No One." And there are others. This is annoying when you're flipping through to find a tune.

Second and most importantly, if you plan on playing this book with any frequency, the pages WILL start falling out after a few months. If this is the case, I recommend pitching in the cash and getting a better quality book. That's what I'm doing here today as I write this review.

4 out of 5 stars Smorgasbord of Beatle Songs   March 10, 2005
    BeatleBangs1964 (United States)
For people interested in playing Beatle songs on guitar, this is a nice little book that is a half a step above a book for complete beginners and is not quite at the intermediate level.

The book offers a plethora of songs and I felt it was clear, direct and well written. I was also quite pleased with the selection of songs.

Musically grossly innacurate. Keys are not just a little off, but way off from the original recordings. What was the point?

    4 out of 5 stars 184 Beatles songs!   November 23, 2003

This book is one of those that shows the line of melody for the right hand and the chord. I know most of the chords, which means that they are simple. The book contains the basic melody but not more than that. It is not an easy-play book. Many of the songs have sharps and flats. I saw some songs with 5 flats. The songs have more than 1 verse. The songs with which I was familiar had all the verses, so it may be that all the verses for these songs are included. The notes and words are a little small for my taste, but they are not tiny. It's not a book for a complete beginner because of all the sharps and flats. When it says, "Every song written and recorded by Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr", I think it means, while they were Beatles. Certainly it does not contain all the songs they wrote after the group broke up. I think this book is quite a bargain because of all the songs it contains.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great book   November 4, 2003

I first had it this book in 9th grade and couldn't stop playing. The chords are easy and though it is not exactly as the recordings go, it works fine(and sometimes even better). Recommended especially for beginners. For those who love to play on classic/spanish guitar - this is the best choice. The lyrics are easy to read and the notes are well balanced with the chords to provide an all together friendly book.
