Hey, like put down the brown acid, man! November 8, 2004 6 out of 12 found this review helpful
This folio is excellent! And with it you can scare all the Republicans in your neighborhood, by rousing the outspoken spirit of Country Joe - "Gimme an Ef!"
I believe Jimi plays the 'Star Spangled Banner' here in 'C', with a sort of 'nuclear detonation at ground zero' flair. Although I play it in 'A', with a sort of 'Roy Buchanan' flair. Either way is fine. Unless of course you're a Republican, whereby the only proper way to play it - is with church choir accompaniment while wearing a formal shirt buttoned up tight to a severely starched collar.
With this folio you'll see (particularly if you've the DVD), how Jimi takes his multi-layered studio cuts and plays them live. (The 'BBC Sessions/Radio One' folios are also an ideal source for this.)
My favorite tunes to jam on here are 'Red House' and 'Hear My Train'. On 'Train' there's this fiddly little trick in the first position 'E', of bending the fifth string/3rd fret and striking the fourth string/3rd fret, combined with some slight vibrato dipping; which once gotten down, will open yourself to a big peice of Jimi's style. (Nugent uses this same sort of device a lot, too.) Anyway, it's in the book. And if ye shall seek, so shall ye find.
