| Customer Reviews: America Ferrera is a Latina superstar who was hard working, conscientious and made her own way to the top! December 10, 2009 D. Fowler (Vermont) America Georgina Ferrera always wanted to be an actress. She says that the passion began when she was only five years old, but when she was seven "she took part in her school's production of Shakespeare's play Hamlet" and was totally hooked. She was very close to her mother, but it was difficult for her mother to drive her to auditions. Balancing work and taking care of a large family was very time consuming. America, not to be deterred, just hopped on a bus and went to them alone. She had earned her own money to take acting lessons and it didn't take long for a hard working, conscientious Latina girl to start landing parts. As many people recall, America got her break in the "Disney television movie Gotta Kick It Up!" Not bad for a teenager!
Thin may be in, but America is all curves and has an excellent body image. She can be proud of many things in her life, her heritage notwithstanding, but also her smarts. She decided that, like her siblings, that a college education was a must and she graduated from the University of Southern California ins 2007. In this book you'll get a glimpse of a young, glamorous role model for young women. She's a girl who worked hard to get where she's at today and she "encourages people everywhere to follow their own dreams, no matter how unreachable they may seem."
I knew absolutely nothing about America, but by the time I finished this book I was totally hooked on her. I enjoyed the way the book portrayed her not only as a Latina, but simply as a young woman who worked hard to achieve her dreams. I loved the aura of modesty she seems to emit, even though she earned everything she had. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a list of her awards and recognition, a timeline, and additional recommended book, DVD and internet resources. This is a well written and fascinating book you might want to add to your library shelves!
