Product Description
Aaliyah Dana Haughton was that music business rarity: a teen idol who transformed herself into a critically acclaimed hip-hop soul artist, a singer who successfully made the transition to actress, and a beautiful woman who never let the trappings of celebrity go to her head. Following her impressive debut at age 14 with the album Age Ain't Nothin' but a Number, Aaliyah raised the bar with her hugely influential and bestselling follow-up, One in a Million. She then took her talents to Hollywood, starring in the action thriller Romeo Must Die and the highly anticipated horror film The Queen of the Damned. But soon after the release of her third album in the summer of 2001, Aaliyah's life was cut short in a tragic plane crash. Here is the inspirational story of the star The Washington Post dubbed "Hip-Hop's Lady Di" -- a woman who, by the time of her death at age twenty-two, touched legions of fans around the world with her haunting voice and gentle spirit.

Thought Provoking, Detailed, And Unforgettable! September 28, 2009 *badgirl* (M-I-A) Christopher John Farley famous for appearance in MTV, VH1 and editor, writer, and critic presents a look into Aaliyah's background, growth as an artist, and actress as well as a look into her dreams, passions, insecurities, and thoughts. He interviewed Aaliyah shortly before her passing and brings before the fans, family, and world a book about the most impacting overall entertainer who embodied, discipline, exceeding musical ambitions, and driven to perfection; a super star who was an overachiever, a perfectionist, with the ultimate goal to be the best, the highest, and the most exalted one as her name embodies.
The book is divided into 11 chapters and the epilogue. The entire reading experience explores her entire musical career with extreme details that few authors can have but that Christopher John Farley had the privilege to obtain though the grace and gifts by God. Through his words of wisdom, experience, and views one becomes familiar with what Aaliyah was like. From her personality to her dreams of being a dancer, actress, singer, and overall performer. It was apparent from my readings throughout these past few months, that Aaliyah was very fond of Janet Jackson and through this book I was able to draw parallels. Like Janet Jackson who was close to Michael Jackson, Aaliyah was close with her brother, Rashad. Both loved to perform, dance, act, and sing. The book has much mentioning on Beyoncé's friendship with her giving quotes, passages and much insight. Also, Timbaland and Missy Elliott were expressed as being extremely closely knit to Aaliyah. While the author strays away from Aaliyah at times, he manages to reel the reader in with quotes, and insights never revealed. For instance, he mentions on one source, an interview with Aaliyah describing her recurrent dream of floating in the air. It is a great attempt to present Aaliyah with class and distinction.
The details of her love life were done in a very classy fashion straying from gossip and portraying the overall look into her decisions, struggles, and outcome. Damon Dash could have been much more thoroughly discussed but the author manages to put just enough to a degree of their true passion and chemistry. Other sources like Maximum Aaliyah manage to bring just a bit more on details regarding R. Kelly and more, yet the author puts his thoughts, facts, and views in an utmost fashion--extremely crafted to include dates, quotes from family members, details on the plane crash and much more without gossipy trends. Although, once again, more could have been put regarding the crash [which I have read about] he did put one of the best amounts of information that I've read as compared to many other authors.
Her music, videos, albums, and impact was scrutinized and contrasted by legends in the music industry. It was "that" very promising dream that Aaliyah stated on an interview that she wanted to be like. She wanted to be compared to legends, to be known as an overall entertainer and the author intentionally or not accomplishes that with more than flying colors. He gives an open minded view leaving the reader to form his or her own thoughts and opinions. He brought to the table the facts of the industry and the impact of Aaliyah. She clearly stood out from the rest of the other R&B, pop stars to bring her own unique style, that no other artist has shown to date. She was unique, and a role model for millions-- who had the down-to-earth qualities yet also "cherished" her position as an artist. The author strikingly portrays this and much more to present a fabulous read definitely impacting and thought provoking!
Book should've been titled "Aaliyah & Friends" July 31, 2008 KATE JONSON (Elgin IL) The author constantly goes off-topic, and the book is very boring. Aaliyah's life was not this boring; nobody's life is this boring!!
Same thing goes for her another bio. HOW BORING WAS SHE???
More of name dropping than Biography January 19, 2007 Elaine Smith (Georgia) I was very disappointed in this book. The author seemed more interested in writing about who he knew than about the rising star.
A star that we will never forget February 1, 2005 Sunshine 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Aaliyah:More than a Women, written by Christopher John Farley, tells about the life of Aaliyah from when she first started acting and singing until her tragic death on August 25,2001.This book really tells the reader about Aaliyah's determination to become the best that she could be, and the way she strived to reach to the top .It explains about how she went to a school of the performing arts, and how she started acting when she was in the first grade in a production of Annie, and she would rehearse three hours a day, four days a week. Also the book tells how Aaliyah went to from a singer to an actress. The book also has quotes and stories, and memories about Aaliyah from many famous actors, producers, video and movie directors, music artists, and family members. I would recommend this book to Aaliyah fans. But I would also recommend this book to people who never thought about reading about Aaliyah because her life is really interesting. The only thing that I did not like about this book was that the author sometimes went off topic. The book is about Aaliyah, but he also started writing about other people, and subjects that didn't have anything to do with Aaliyah. But, besides that the book was pretty good.
Very healing December 1, 2004 R. Brittain (Muncy, PA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
For anyone who still feels the world's loss of Aaliyah, but isn't in to reading a long book, this is a great synopsis of her short life and all her accomplishments. I recommend to all of her fans.
