Product Description A blessed event becomes a nightmare for pregnant homicide detective Jane Rizzoli when she finds herself on the wrong side of a hostage crisis in this timely and relentless new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Body Double.
A nameless, beautiful woman appears to be just another corpse in the morgue. An apparent suicide, she lies on a gurney, awaiting the dissecting scalpel of medical examiner Maura Isles. But when Maura unzips the body bag and looks down at the body, she gets the fright of her life. The corpse opens its eyes.
Very much alive, the woman is rushed to the hospital, where with shockingly cool precision, she murders a security guard and seizes hostages . . . one of them a pregnant patient, Jane Rizzoli.
Who is this violent, desperate soul, and what does she want? As the tense hours tick by, Maura joins forces with Jane’s husband, FBI agent Gabriel Dean, to track down the mysterious killer’s identity. When federal agents suddenly appear on the scene, Maura and Gabriel realize that they are dealing with a case that goes far deeper than just an ordinary hostage crisis.
Only Jane, trapped with the armed madwoman, holds the key to the mystery. And only she can solve it–if she survives the night.

Powerful story! March 16, 2010 Julie Ruth (Dearborn, MI) This edition in the Rizzoli and Isles saga is different....it starts off from the perspective of Mila, an illegal alien from Russia who has been lured to America on false pretenses. Once she arrives she is immediately sold like a piece of meat to a prostitution ring where there is no escape. This part of the story is horrific and gritty, but very real. The story then meets up with Maura when she discovers one of the bodies in the morgue is actually still alive and rushes her to the emergency room. In the same hospital Jane has gone into labor and is then taken hostage by the victin from the morgue. Not wanting to spoil the rest of the book, it then describes the events that have lead this young women to take such drastic measures. There are a lot of big-name players in this prostitution ring. The other great part of this book is seeing Jane deal with being a mother and how the big tough cop can not deal with her crying newborn. The layers of betrayal run deep in this novel. A great edition to the series.
Had to force myself to finish this December 17, 2009 K. Holmes (Tulsa, OK) I just finished listening to the audiobook version of this - really had to force myself to finish it. This is the second book of Ms Gerritsen's that I've tried; I couldn't get through the tedium of the first one, but thought I'd give another shot since so many people seem to really enjoy her novels.
I found this story to have way too much "filler" talking about the main character's home life - trouble breast feeding the new baby, trouble deciding on a name, on and on.
Added to that the fact that the story was just way too full of coincidences, and not much suspense at all, I really don't think I'll be trying any more from this author.
Prepare for another sleepless night... September 23, 2009 M.C.Rio (The Woodlands, TX) Gerritsen's Rizzoli/Isles books just get better and better with every nail-biting episode. This page-turner kept me up all night, but the twists and beautifully satisfying end more than compensated for that single night's sleep.
Being a huge fan of the TV series, "Law and Order SVU," Vanish was right up my alley. The gut-wrenching opening sequence held me with every tragic word. Mila's story is eerily familiar - something we only see in movies - yet Gerritsen's words are somehow more effective in reminding us that this horror is a reality. Her tale is described in such a way that the reader is forced to visualize every heinous detail, grabbing your interest and your heart and holding on until the book's very last word...as you desperately seek justice.
...enter two of the most admirable and well-developed heroes who just happen to be women, Detective Rizzoli and Dr. Isles. Although we have faith in their abilities (they haven't disappointed us yet,) one is kept wondering, afraid for their safety, as usual, and cheering them on as they risk everything for the greater good.
For Gerritsen fans, Vanish reaches into the most remote depths of emotions and takes you through an intertwining of compelling characters on their unpredictable paths - the very best Rizzoli/Isles book yet. Bravo!
A solid easy-reading suspense thriller! May 18, 2009 Paul Weiss (Dundas, Ontario Canada) The opening scenes in "Vanish" are pure suspense thriller with Gerritsen writing in top form. Patterson, Preston, Child, Deaver, Follett, Palmer ... eat your hearts out!
Maura Isles, Boston's medical examiner and a frequent character in Gerritsen's novels, opens up a body bag to begin an autopsy only to discover that her subject is still alive. "Vanish" begins in high gear and rarely lets up. When that mysterious "body" recovers and takes a group of patients hostage, including a very pregnant detective Jane Rizzoli, readers will be glued to their seats flipping pages as quickly as they can.
But we all know that eventually a novel has to contain a plot. High speed action and events alone are not sufficient to sustain a quality novel and Tess Gerritsen doesn't miss the mark in this department either. Recent news about the "personal ads" section of Craigslist classified ads website have put stories of white slavery and sexual trafficking into the minds of the world and Gerritsen's plot is nothing if not topical. Government corruption and the abuse of eastern women looking for a better life in the west makes for some great reading.
While "Vanish" is more suspense thriller than medical thriller, Gerritsen remains true to her roots and provides her fans with lots of medical context and details that provide a vivid aura of authenticity.
"Vanish" isn't taxing in any literary sense but it certainly won't lose her any fans. Great suspense, great enjoyment and a good solid addition to her body of work.
