Amazon.com Review British actor and comedian Hugh Laurie's first book is a spot-on spy spoof about hapless ex-soldier Thomas Lang, who is drawn unwittingly and unwillingly into the center of a dangerous James Bond-like plot of international terrorists, arms dealing, high-tech weapons, and CIA spooks. You may recall having seen Laurie in the English television series Jeeves and Wooster; Laurie played Bertie Wooster, the clutzy hero of the P.G. Wodehouse comic novels that originated those characters. The lineage from Wodehouse's Wooster to Laurie's Lang is clear, and, if you like Wodehouse, you'll probably love The Gun Seller.
Product Description
Hugh Laurie concocts an uproarious cocktail of comic zingers and over-the-top action in this "ripping spoof of the spy genre" (Vanity Fair) -- the irresistible tale of a former Scots Guard-turned-hired gun, a freelance soldier of fortune who also happens to be one heck of a nice guy. Cold-blooded murder just isn't Thomas Lang's cup of tea. Offered a bundle to assassinate an American industrialist, he opts to warn the intended victim instead -- a good deed that soon takes a bad turn. Quicker than he can down a shot of his favorite whiskey, Lang is bashing heads with a Buddha statue, matching wits with evil billionaires, and putting his life (among other things) in the hands of a bevy of femmes fatales. Up against rogue CIA agents, wannabe terrorists, and an arms dealer looking to make a high-tech killing, Lang's out to save the leggy lady he has come to love...and prevent an international bloodbath to boot.

The droll humour and witty asides are amusing enough, but this cheeky spy novel doesn't completely satisfy in the end June 20, 2009 J. Norburn (Quesnel, BC, Canada) For the most part, I enjoyed this novel, particularly its droll British humour. I'm not convinced though that a chuckle here and a chuckle there is enough for me to give this novel an enthusiastic recommendation. It's an amusing enough spy novel although it isn't outrageous enough to qualify as an inspired genre spoof and has a little too much tongue-in-cheek humour to generate any real suspense. The result is that it doesn't quite succeed at being a great comic caper nor does it fully satisfy as a nail biting thriller. It's a little of both but somehow, not enough of either. The novel won me over initially, but I found my interest wane the further I got into it. The plot's premise is a little flawed and, even though I know it isn't worth worrying about, there were a few plot points that I had trouble accepting. All in all - this is a pretty entertaining 3 star novel. Amusing enough, but it wears thin after a while. I would have liked to have seen Laurie fully commit one way or the other. He should have made this an all out spoof or he should have toned down the witty asides and ratcheted up the suspense, making it a genuine thriller. As it is, it's an entertaining diversion that isn't completely satisfying.
I was really impressed. June 14, 2009 K. C. Collins (Tucson, AZ USA) I was given this book as a Mother's Day gift. I didn't even notice that the author was Hugh Laurie until I got to the end of the book. I really can't imagine saying anything more that what has already been written. I found this book, funny, exciting and a lot of fun. I am really looking forward to his new book this fall. If it is half as good as this one it should be a wonderful read!
Hugh Laurie is so Unfairly Talented! May 11, 2009 Tiffany (california) This book is SO WELL written, I've recommended it to EVERYONE I know! Thanks AGAIN Hugh.
I loved it! May 7, 2009 Robert McRobert (Florida) Hey, its just a very funny novel, lots of satire, farce and wit. You'll enjoy it more then House.

If you're a Hugh Laurie fan, and you haven't read The Gun Seller, you're not really a Hugh Laurie fan. A gripping thriller! Think a very intelligent Wooster & Jeeves vis-a-vis Mister... Bond, James Bond.
