    Product Description
A hilarious blast of scathing irreverence from the award-winning actor and comedian.

A pissed off Leary is the best Leary, says one critic of the writer and comic. In Why We Suck, Dr. Denis Leary uses his common sense, and his biting and hilarious take on the world, to attack the politically correct, the hypocritical, the obese, the thin--basically everyone who takes themselves too seriously. He does so with the extra oomph of a doctorate bestowed upon him by his alma mater Emerson College. Sure it s just a celebrity type of thing--they only gave it to me because I m famous. Leary explains. But it s legal and it means I get to say I m a doctor--just like Dr. Phil.

In Why We Suck, Leary s famously smart style and sardonic wit have found their fullest and fiercest expression yet. Zeroing in on the ridiculous wherever he finds it, Leary unravels his Irish Catholic upbringing, the folly of celebrity, the pressures of family life, and the great hypocrisy of politics with the same bright, savage, and profane insight he brought to his critically acclaimed one-man shows No Cure for Cancer and Lock n Load, and his platinum-selling song, Asshole.

Proudly Irish American, defiantly working class, with a reserve of compassion for the underdog and the overlooked, Leary delivers blistering diatribes that are penetrating social commentary with no holds barred. Leary s book will find wide appeal among people who want to laugh out loud or find a guide who matches their view of what s wrong in America and the world-at-large; and fans of his one-man shows, his many movies, and Rescue Me, Leary s Golden Globe and Emmy nominated television show. Why We Suck is the latest salvo from one of America s most original and biting comic satirists.

5 out of 5 stars Great Rant!   June 19, 2009

This book is a great rant. He goes on for chapter after chapter like he's on stage. While I felt he gave Oprah a little too much credit, he does rip on Dr. Phil quite a bit.

Any Denis Leary fan should read this book.

    2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!   June 8, 2009

The only good thing about this book is that it's an easy read. But it ends there. While Denis Leary is usually funny, this book comes across as someone's rant more than anything else. The preaching does not stop throughout the book. It's also nice when an author mentions his "beautiful" family once in his book, but come on already.. Feels like he did something wrong and keeps trying to kiss up in every other chapter. The worst part is that the first few pages are actually relatively funny. Do yourselves a favor and read any other chapter (if u can) and you quickly see how different the book is from the first few pages.

2 out of 5 stars THIS is why we suck   June 7, 2009

The reason we suck is because people like Denis Leary can write books like this and people like me will buy them. He entertained me at first, but lost me right away. Not only does it turn into his biography, but he writes in a very unpleasant way. If I wanted to learn about his childhood and his family, I would have looked for his biography. I definately do not recommend this and I wish I could take my $9.99 back.

5 out of 5 stars Leary delivers what he said he would.   June 5, 2009
    Carolyn (Los Angeles, CA)
One of the first things Leary will tell you when you open this book is that he will end up pissing you off. No matter your background, your gender, your age, he will manage to anger you some way or another.

Saying that, I admit there were moments where I found myself disagreeing with Leary, mostly on the stereotypes of men and women, though I only disagreed a little, and I only disagreed when it came to the behavior of my husband and myself. Most other men and women do often fit into the stereotypes, but even then you have to keep in mind that at times Leary is intentionally exaggerating.

His style of writing is very personal, do not go nitpicking at grammatical errors or at lazy word choices, because again, it's intentional. If you can't help nitpicking, then don't read the book.

Overall the book is very funny and very interesting. Hopefully, one might make a mental note of self-improvement if they find that they make some of the mistakes that Leary points out here. The ones that particularly stick to me are his rants on raising children and being politically correct. If you can stand brutal honesty, go ahead and read this book, if you can't stand it at all, run as far from it as possible, although I don't think running will be of much use in the real world.
