1 out of 5 stars Oh Dear, Oh Dear.   June 18, 2009
Ned Middleton (British professional underwater photo-journalist & author)
Not only are some of the photographs of a very inferior quality, others appear to be professional models posing for effect. In these pictures, any thoughts of safety are discarded as we find attractive, scantily clad female divers wearing a minimum of diving equipment - not even a BC (Buoyancy Compensator) or life jacket when at sea in an overcrowded boat. With their male companions bristling with muscles and wearing their own scuba harnesses over bare skin, one is left wondering what message this author is trying to impart. It certainly has nothing to do with a diving guide to anywhere. Elsewhere we find photographs of divers physically manhandling marine life with bare hands and pictures of sea shells taken from the sea.

Curiously, the book itself is full of colour photographs up to the centre pages but only B&W thereafter - something which gives the impression of having run out of money half way through publishing and I do so wish they had! The content also loses it's way at that same halfway point. What starts out (in line with the book's title) as an underwater guide to Mauritius, suddenly attempts to be come all things to all divers commencing with a section on health with the awful heading; "Too old to dive and other ailments." Since when was age an ailment? This is followed by Hazards of the Sea, Underwater Photography, Shells, then back to Diving off the Islands, before returning to the overall theme of "I have lost my way in this book" with an attempt at basic diving instruction over the remaining 52 pages.

In summary, this book loses it's way in that it sets out to be a guide to a specific country and then attempts to include other subjects which are worthy of much larger books in their own right.

Not worth the cover price - even if it were free.
